Arrival Story:
Hope was eating out of a dumpster at a bar (she was eating dried up watermelon rinds when we spotted her). We asked if we could rescue her. We set a trap (very humane trap) and the first catch was Hope with a surprise - a kitten. Where there's one kitten, there's more. We set the trap again and got another kitten, then 2 more, then another. Hope had been dropped off at the dumpster and had her kittens there. We took Hope to the vet and she was malnourished, dehydrated, had parsites and an upper respiratory infection. She got lots of medicine and is getting better. Her kittens are getting used to being inside (they have their own building to live in) and we are kinda looking for homes for them. (Not in too much of a hurry.) She lives with us.

Bio:
Hope has been a tremendous help with our new kitten, Flash. When we rescued Flash, he wasnt weaned and Hope nursed him. 9/4/08 update: Our precious Hope crossed the Rainbow Bridge today. Bone cancer took our Butterball today.

Crossing the Rainbow Bridge

This is Hope's Mommy writing: This is a very sad day for us. We had to help Hope cross the Rainbow Bridge today.
She had started limping about a month ago & then week before last, her left hind leg started swelling & she started losing weight. We took her to the vet & they said she had a broken leg but were not able to determine how it happened since she is an indoor cat & doesnt jump up on high things. They indicated the break was very unusual looking & took xrays of her legs & hips. It was determined she had bone cancer & they recommended several options - 1) leaving it as it was and letting nature takes it course (they were pretty sure the cancer had spread). 2) putting a pin in to try to get the bone to grow back. 3) amputation.
They recommended we try to get her strength up some before the surgery & put her on pain meds while we made the decision.
We decided to let the doctor do the surgery this week. They said she was in a lot of pain. We felt amputation was the best option.
We took her to the vet's office on Tuesday & her surgery was this morning. She had a tough time during surgery & they had to "save" her several times. Then about 3 hours ago, they called to say she wasnt doing well and had stopped breathing several times & they thought the end was near. They put her on IVs of heart meds & oxygen.
We went to tell her goodbye & stayed with her while she crossed the bridge. This is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. But she is no longer suffering & she had a good life with us. Her brothers & sisters love her so much. They are looking for her tonight.

Our sweet Butterball is running & jumping with her friends (I think of Pea & what a good friend she was to Hope). Bet they are having a good time together.
Please say a purrer for us tonight.

Hope & Pea - be sweet & take care of each other.

One year anniversary of my rescue

The first week of July marks the first anniversary of my rescue from the dumpster with my kittens. So much has happened in the past year.
I am healthy and very "fluffy". My papa has nicknamed me Butterball. He is so nice to me and I enjoy living with my family so much.
Granddaddy still has my kittens and he says they are really growing up. He has built a big outdoor cage for them and they play outside whenever they want. I am glad they have a good home too.
Wanted to update everyone on my progress and publically thank my wonderful family for all they do for me.
Well, time to eat and go to bed. More later.
