Arrival Story:
I was looking after some feral kittens and their Momma for weeks. One day a Momma that I had never seen before came over to me and dropped what I thought was a dead kitten at my feet. Her eyes and nose were glued shut with infection. He was motionless except for faint mouth breathing. I got a shoe box and put her in it and drove too fast to the vet. The whole time driving the box did not move. I was very sad. I got to the vet and she took the box and took off the lid. Out came this kitten with a green mess gluing her eyes and nose shut, jumped off the table and ran thru the vet offices. I began to laugh. The vet said "This is not funny!" I said "I swear I thought the cat had passed." We caught her and Vet said she didn't look good at all, that sometimes before they pass they get a burst of energy. Vet stated "If this kitty's temp is over 104 and if her lungs don't sound good I'll have to put her down." I was no longer laughing. Her temp was 105. But her lungs were clear!!!! The tech cleaned up all the green gook from her eyes and nose. She had beautiful eyes. She only weighed 3 LBs.I had her tested fro FeLuk & FIV. Both were neg. Vet gave her antibiotics and stuff for her eyes. We called her Pixie.Vet said she'll need round the clock care and she still might not make it. I got some A/D food and a syringe, some Vicks and set her up in my spare bathroom. I'd force feed her every 3 hours and take the Vicks, put a dab on the shower wall and ran the hot water on it for 15 mins making the room nice and steamy. She was feral and would hide behind the tiolet everytime I can into the bathroom. I took her back to the vet a week later. She had put on over a pound, her eyes and nose were clear and she was so friendly. The whole office couldn't believe it was the same kitten. I went back to where I saw her Mom and the Momma kitty was crying and crying. If I had a wish it would have been to tell her he baby is fine. I ended up taking her ( along with 2 other of the original stray kittens) to NY with us. My brother took the 2 and my sister took Pixie. All of my sisters kitties have "musical" names..."Jazz, Calypso, BeBop, Rag Time etc. So we changed her name to Dixie, which fit her fine. She did after all come from Florida Dixie Land! She got a new baby brother. I named him Kabuki! They are best buddies!
