Been too long since I posted an update. We're still in Texas, but have since moved back to the town where General Sterling Price showed up on my doorstep in fall of 1987. I drive by the place now and then. Lots of new homes are in the area, but the duplex is still there. How strange to have come to Texas by way of North Carolina to find Sterling. Now he's resting on a hillside in North Carolina where I had been before coming to Texas.

Sometimes, life's just weird.

Gonna Be a Hot One!

We've already had one triple digit day (June 5) and plenty of days in the upper 90s. After a couple of years with what I would call moderate heat, it looks like this year we are going to have a good old fashioned Texas summer. For the uninitiated, that means stinking hot! Staying in the 80s throughout the night. Don't walk on concrete in your bare feet. And through the roof electric bills. UGH!!

Still Loving Texas

Summer is almost here. Texas summer, that is. Most everywhere else summer doesn't start until June, but here we start warming up in May.

Hard to believe that we have been back in Texas for almost two years.

Back in Texas

Well, we up and moved back to Texas just a few miles north of where I found you back in October 1987. Seems like so long ago and yet like yesterday when you showed up on the doorstep. I called you Junior for a short while until it was for sure we would keep you. Then settled on General Sterling Price as a name more befitting your character.

It's Been a while

You would have enjoyed Kentucky. Enough snow to say there's been a winter. Plenty of birds and squirrels chirping and chattering in the trees to keep you occupied.

And the neighbors are mostly old softies who would have been good for extra belly rubs and all the tuna you could eat. Man, you would have been living large here and that's a fact.

Gotta run. Too much work to do. That hasn't changed much, eh, old friend? But I promise not to take so long to make my next visit.

A dusting of snow....

We got a light dusting of snow yesterday and into the evening. Just enough powder on the ground so you know that it snowed. And today it is a gray overcast day which means the sun won't succeed in melting it away.

You weren't a big fan of snow, but you didn't hate it either -- at least not obsessively so. Your black and white markings were purrrrfect for this type of weather. You would have loved hunting on this day of black and white, with the sharp bite of winter bearing one's breath into plain view.

But no winter chill could overpower the warmth of your great, giving heart.

Miss you today as much as the day we lost you.

Missing You

It's been over three years since I lost you, buddy, but I think about you most every day.

Hannah saw a stray gray and white cat yesterday and said, "Daddy, he looks like Sterling!"

She was only two years old when we lost you, but she remembers, too.

The Arrival

Sterling arrived on the doorstep of my apartment back in Keene, Texas in the fall of 1987. There was no way I could have known then how the next fifteen years would have The General grow to have a place in my heart that can never be filled by anyone else.
