Arrival Story:
Daisy and her brother, Frito, have had several mommies already. Initially, Daisy belonged to a friend of my family. When the friend moved, she asked my cousin Jeannie (a major cat-lover) to look after Daisy and Frito while she got settled in her new home. When the friend sent for Daisy and Frito, however, Jeannie had gotten so attached to them, she didn't want to give them up. Daisy lived with Jeannie for many years, in a house filled with cats -- sometimes as many as 20! Daisy and Frito were Jeannie's special cats, and were kept in her room, mostly away from the rest of the cats. My cousin Jeannie died suddenly in November 2003, leaving behind eight cats, including Daisy and Frito. The cats, who were a major focus of Jeannie's life, were thoughtlessly put in a shelter, even though I had offered to help find homes for them. When I found out the cats were in a shelter, I was furious! My husband and I went right to the shelter (an excellent, clean, no-kill facility) and adopted Daisy and her brother.

Bio:
Daisy was quiet and unassuming when she first came to live with us in December 2003. Now that she's comfortable with us, however, she is making her presence known! When she's hungry and/or if a meal is late, she meows a bunch of ladylike-but-persistent meows that we call "peeps." She's a petite little girl, but she loves to eat -- recently she has begun licking Frito's dish clean as well as her own. Daisy will hang out in the kitchen with her nose in the air, sniffing the aromas of whatever we've cooked for dinner. Sometimes she jumps up on the counter, but we don't let her get away with that! She's very affectionate and is getting more confident about hanging around when we have company, instead of running to hide. If we could just get her to stop tearing out huge hanks of her fur and leaving them all over the house, she'd be the perfect little lady! Daisy was recently diagnosed with malignant melanoma, and underwent surgery to have a tumor removed from her mouth. Melanoma is very aggressive, and is rare in cats, so the surgery also required the removal of her teeth and jawbone in the area of hte tumor. She is recovering well, and with her mouth closed, you wouldn't even know anything had been removed from her face! Because this kind of cancer is so aggressive and rare, though, it's difficult for our vets to say how much time Daisy has left. Please keep our Shiny Dimes Girl in your thoughts! 3/9/09 -- Daisy went over the Rainbow Bridge today. She stayed cancer-free for more than 2 years after her surgery, but her compromised facial structure made her very prone to infection. In August 2008, Daisy developed an abscess in her head and was seriously ill. She bounced back from that, but three months later, another abscess developed in such a way that she lost sight in her right eye. Three months later -- which leads us up to present-day -- she developed a third abscess that caused her to lose her sight in her left eye. Throughout all her illnesses, Daisy's personality never flagged. She was always sweet and dignified. It broke our hearts to say goodbye to her, but we are thankful for the years we shared with her. Rest in peace, Shiny Dimes girl.
