Arrival Story:
Well, one of coworkers told me about her in the beginning of August. The people that live above the store have a wayward daughter, she came home, brought the cat, cat was pregnant, daughter hit the road again, left cat. Cat had kittens. They said they could find homes for the kittens, but did not want the cat. It was obviously her fault that she got pregnant ( I could strangle those idiots!! ) so, I went over there to look at the cat. The apartment was dark and dank, the guy looked like a very hairy Neanderthal ( eeew ) , there were 2 dogs probably full of fleas as they were scratching non-stop. I'm not sure the scantily-clad owner ( eeeew, eeeew and eeew again !!! ) was flea-free. I checked out the kitty, nice and people friendly, and decided to take her after the kittens were weaned. They ripped the kittens off her at like 7 weeks, those morons, and couldn't get rid of little Maneki fast enough. It was us or the pound. I sent Mark - the coworker- over to pick her up, couldn't bring myself to go there another time haha.

Bio:
October 15th, 2007: well, our little Maneki has to have her left hind leg amputated today. On Saturday afternoon, she probably was attacked by a dog. we could see the bloody teeth marks on her right leg, and her left leg was very bruised, and on Sunday it became quite clear it was broken. I talked to our vet on the phone, and they told me to bring her in on Monday, as there was nothing they could have done on the weekend. I'm pretty good, medically, and had properly taken care of her wounds, put her on pain meds/valium, and started her on antibiotics, right after the accident. The decision to amputate her little leg was not easy. The femur bone was quite crushed, ( imagine a dog crushing a bone ) the large 2 pieces are at a very weird angle and there are several bone shards in there, the doc said the outcome was about 70% pending closer inspection during surgery if he would try to nail it and screw on a plate. The point is that she is a very feisty cat, and does not like at all to lie still. Even with the broken leg, she would try to crawl out of the cage. I had her on 1/2 Valium, and still she tried to move around, and then she'd be in pain again. So, the outlook of her having to be confined for 6 to 8 weeks at least was not a real option. Putting it all together, it seems to be the better solution to amputate her leg. She'll be confined for a week only. we have a wonderful contraption here at home: 2 netted cages, 7 feet long when combined, 2 ft high and 2 ft wide. We can carry them around in the house, and can have her in the living room during the day. At night, she stays in our spare bedroom. so, mom is quite certain to have made the right decision here. 6/08: Maneki has beautifully adapted to the 3-legged life. She has lots of character and does not back down with the boys. Our daughter Donna has taken a shine to her, and when she moved to Portland this month, Maneki moved with her. She is a city girl now.
