Meow, everyone! This is Merlin from Louisiana. My meowmie first saw me in 1993 sitting on the picnic table outside the window of the house. I was talking to the other kitties and they were chattering back. Meowmie told me later that she thought I was black and white, but then she realized that I was so hungry that I had lost a lot of the hair on my body. She got really mad that I was so neglected (I was a stray at the time, and didn't trust hoomans at all - I think hoomans call that feral).
She started putting food out for me and then would sit on the steps outside the house and talk to me and just read. Then she put a little box outside with bars on the door and put some smelly food in it and trapped me in there! Then she put me in a fast moving thing and brought me to a place that I didn't like so much. She told the people there that I was wild and needed shots and to be "fixed", which I didn't understand because I wasn't broken!
I woke up and Meowmie picked me up in the fast moving thing and brought me back to the house and I was so upset I disappeared for three days to show her how mad I was. I also lost that necklace thing with the metal tag the people at the place had put on me. Meowmie told me later that she'd cried and cried and called all the places in the area that might have picked me up, but I was just hiding.
After that I didn't come too close to her for a while, but she did the sitting on the steps thing again and time passed and I would move closer and closer to where she sat on the steps. Then one day I surprised us both by jumping into her lap! She squealed and I squealed and I jumped down but then I started doing this every day and she'd talk to me and tell me what a beautiful boy I was and that I had a home now and that as soon as I went back to that place I went to get fixed (even though I wasn't broken) and had some tests done that she would bring me into the house with my new brothers and sisters.
We went back to the place and they did the tests (which I hadn't studied for at all) and Meowmie and the lady who did the tests had water coming out of their eyes because I had something called FIV. Meowmie explained to me that that was okay, that I was healthy at the time and that she was bringing me into the house with my brothers and sisters because she had promised me. That I wasn't supposed to fight with them or anything like that. I could understand that. She also told me that I couldn't go outside again unless I was in the box with the bars on the door and with her or Pawpie. She said this was because there were monsters outside and I knew what she meant because the two-leggeds would always chase me off and were mean, not like Meowmie and Pawpie at all.
So I moved into the house! Inside was good! And it was cool inside when it was hot outside! And it was warm inside when it was cold outside! And I had food and was never hungry and I had clean water and was never thirsty.
I loved to jump on Meowmie's shoulders and then wrap myself around them and ride her around, then I'd slink down until I was lying in her arms and she'd kiss me and love on me and tell me what a good boy I was and how beautiful.
By this time I had grown all my hair back and I was all black. With all feline modesty I have to say I cut quite the handsome figure!
Meowmie called me Merlin from the first but she also called me Familiar sometimes and she'd always call me sweetie or baby, but I think that was just because she loved me a lot because she always called the other kitties that, too.
I had four good years with Meowmie and Pawpie and my brothers and sisters before that FIV stuff came back and I got really sick. I couldn't stay here anymore and had to move on, but I'm still around Meowmie and I let her see me once in a while. I always watch over her from the Rainbow Bridge, though. I love my meowmie so much and I know she still misses me.
