Arrival Story:
Spare was a feral cat in the neighborhood. He started showing up for the snacks we'd put out for other critters (chipmonks, possums, squirrels). At first, he'd run if he even saw us through the sliding glass doors, then he'd stay if we just stuck out a hand with more food, and finally, after nearly a year, he'd stay and meow to be petted! We already had three indoor cats, so we started referring to him as "the spare cat" as in "you guys behave! We have a spare." or "Honey, the spare cat is here, did you put out any food?" By the time he came inside to stay, the name had stuck and he answered to it. We figured he just decided it was better to be the Spare cat than the Homeless cat.

Bio:
In spite of his feral background and being abandoned (probably by a former neighbor who moved out shortly before he started showing up), he's one of the most Zen cats I've ever known, even friendly to the dogs.
