Shocking News

Bitu has been receiving some shocking news over the last couple days. For one thing, the Mac Kitties Club has expanded their ranks to include dogs. We're all for people and their pets becoming interested in becoming Mac users, but it was enough to make Bitu run to her scratching box. Then somebody we'd never seen before came along claiming to have read Bitu's diary who appeared interested in being a Catster Friend and a potential member of KittyWhiskas For Catsters, but before Bitu issued any invitations to that particular cat, Minnie's page had suddenly disappeared. Minnie can't help that she never had pictures taken in life which would allow people to see what she looked like in life if they were to look at the official portrait space. I was hoping to be able to use a nice picture of a lit candle to represent her at least on Bitu's own page or on the KittyWhiskas For Catsters Memorial Wall page, though I thought that somebody might want to know her life story even if we could only fill in the details as we knew them. But if I had to check the box that said she's not around anymore, then she would have been relegated to the back burner and nobody would have bothered to look, even though she was a little over four and a half when she died of a bad case of fleas at the Rose City Veterinary Hospital and would be seven now if she were still alive. But she was considered (at least by us) as having one life left which we believe she's been enjoying in Heaven for almost three years. We've also taken some comfort in the fact that other cats who have gone before Minnie who knew about in life were willing to become her friends, though she would probably insist on being the top cat among them. And even some living cats wanted to be Minnie's friends, even though they'll have to wait for awhile before they get to meet her personally some day. And Minnie did exist between July 2, 2000 and February 3, 2005, no matter what anybody says. And she died naturally, despite any accusations of our having had her put to sleep. We wanted her to get well and come home.

Animal Cruelty And Class Discrimination

Bitu felt compelled to write an article today about the Puerto Rican Animal Control Massacre from a pet's perspective. I thought I'd copy it into her diary in case somebody missed it on the KittyWhiskas For Catsters page:

Animal Cruelty And Class Discrimination

One of our members recently felt compelled to alert me to an article which points out a clear-cut case of both animal cruelty and class discrimination. It came from News, but for those of you who might not go to that page very often to get your news from the computer, here's the basic run-down: There was a recent crackdown in Puerto Rico against people who tried to keep pets in low-income buildings with "no pet" rules. Though the local Animal Control promised that the confiscated pets would be well cared for, the reality is that practically all of them - cats and dogs alike - were thrown from a bridge in an effort to kill them. Only a few dogs survived, though they suffered broken legs and other injuries. It makes you wonder why the richer apartment buildings weren't targeted the same way. As a pet in a low-income building full of elderly and disabled tenants such as my people are, I know from experience what joy can come from having a pet when you might not have too many human friends. Though our building here has a fee for canine and feline residents, the fee can be waived for those who have a doctor's letter explaining how the pet can be a companion or be useful as a service animal. There are some birds here, too, though I'm not sure how they're officially accommodated. It seems to me that there could be such accommodation for pets in Puerto Rico, too. People of all economic levels love pets, but especially the poor. One of my people is sometimes invited to make a speech on behalf of low-income housing, so I'm sure he would also be glad to make a speech on behalf of low-income pets, too, if he were asked. But since he doesn't write his speeches owing to being a lousy speller, he prefers to make his speeches directly from the heart, so that's why my other human is writing this article for me. I wish we could lodge some kind of official protest to let the Puerto Rican Animal Control know how wrong it is to kill innocent animals, especially those taken in by poor people. Don't they have a Humane Society down there? Since one of my people knows Spanish, maybe she could let them know how we feel in
a way they could understand, especially since all official business is conducted in Spanish in Puerto Rico, even though some people also know English. Though we may not be able to help the unfortunate pets who were killed in this clear-cut case of animal cruelty and class discrimination, we should find a way for our group to remember them the same way we would like to remember our deceased family members on our Memorial Wall. Let's do everything we can to ensure that nothing like this will ever happen to an innocent pet again, especially if they find themselves among poor people who really want to love them.

More Presents For Bitu

Bitu got some more "rosettes" today (October 13, 2005). One was a pumpkin and the other was a flying bat, since it's getting so close to Halloween. The flying bat reminded me of a joke which is in a Spanish-language joke book I have: Two girl mice were walking along when a bat suddenly flew by. One got scared and asked, "What was that?" The other one answered, "That's my boyfriend. He's a pilot." I told the joke (translated, of course) to the one who'd given the flying bat to Bitu and he said that it should be put up in the Forums one of these days. I know that at least one page has a Joke of the Week, but I don't know if there are any prizes beyond bragging rights.

Bitu's Third Star

Bitu got another star for her collection today. It was from a cat named Zazu who she'd never met before. It was hard to find the right one (there are both boy and girl cats named Zazu here), but eventually I found the right one so I could send a thank-you note on Bitu's behalf. I wonder if Bitu's got a secret admirer...

Diary of the Day (Part Two)

I can't believe it! Our diary has been picked as Diary of the Day for October 11, 2007. But this time was different. Some of Bitu's Catster Friends looked at it and liked what they saw. Some had particular favorites, but some liked everything. Bitu even got some notes of congratulation from some of the other clubs she belongs to. I wonder what will happen when the next special occasion comes along.

Bitu and the Visiting Nurse's Suitcase

I've been plagued by a leg infection for several years, owing to leaving something in my skin too long that eventually became too painful for me to live with. When we still had Minnie, she often liked to be on my bed. After my leg got so sore and Minnie would get on the bed with me, I was able to say, "Easy, easy, easy!" and she knew to make her way around my sore spots (at least most of the time). By the time my sore spots got so painful that I had to go to the hospital a couple times (one for almost a week and just overnight the second time), Bitu had come along. When home health nurses have come to take care of my leg at home, Bitu has hidden most of the time, though she became relaxed enough with some of them to stay out where they could see her. Sometimes she's been known to take a lick of the water they wanted to use to wash my sore spots before wrapping my leg up again. After we changed our insurance so we could keep the doctor we've been seeing so recently about my leg, we wanted to arrange for a home health nurse in case the weather got too bad for us to take the train to the clinic where we've been going. We asked for a certain nurse who'd done me before because she knows about us and our situation. To our surprise, she came this afternoon to help me the way she did before. When she had to go get something from her car while she was helping me, Bitu emerged from hiding long enough to sniff all around her suitcase (it's a suitcase on wheels with a pull-out handle). Then when the nurse came back, Bitu ran off to hide again. We wonder if Bitu will take time to sniff around the suitcase every time the nurse comes. My brother's afraid that she might hurt herself by doing it, but I don't think she will.

Our First Poll

A few days ago, I put forward the idea for our KittyWhiskas For Catsters Club to use our Group Photos space as a Memorial Wall for those members whose family couldn't be invited to our group because of not knowing about it in life. Most who have said something about it even before the poll went up have generally been in favor of it, though I'd rather we hear from as many as we can before making an official decision. But even if it went through, Bitu would have the dubious distinction of not being able to put Minnie's picture up with everybody else's because the only picture of Minnie that exists is the one the Humane Society took at the Rose City Veterinary Hospital when Minnie died of a bad case of fleas on February 3, 2005 and we don't have that picture, so that's why Minnie couldn't even have her own page. It would make Bitu look bad as Founding Member and President of KittyWhiskas For Catsters if she couldn't put Minnie's picture up with everybody else's, especially after I thought of the idea of the Memorial Wall in the first place. It's kind of embarrassing when you think about it, but if enough people go for it, we couldn't let them down.

Some New Invitations

Bitu's gotten some invitations to other groups now. Even though she prefers to be by herself, she was invited to the "I'm No Longer Alone" Club. She was also invited to the Chatty Cats Club, though she doesn't talk much unless she's in the mood. Now she belongs to four Catster Clubs, though she still prefers to be the top cat in the KittyWhiskas For Catsters Club. But because we still favor Motorola chip Macs, she feels compelled to uphold their reputation in the Mac Kitties Club, though sometimes the "Stop" and "Reload" buttons are more trouble than they're worth. If she could, she'd scratch a box in frustration, but her scratching box is on the fifth floor and the computer is on the seventh floor.

Finally Getting Some Help

Our KittyWhiskas For Catsters Club is expanding faster than I expected. It seems that I've also gotten a couple members through the Catster Group Directory link, though I've been sending official invitations most of the time. The new members from the directory link seem enthusiastic about making things interesting for our group, so I've appointed one as our new Vice President and her adopted sister as her assistant, since both their pictures showed up when I tried to only get one, but I guess they do things that way around here so multiple-cat households won't feel like they're leaving anybody out. It's probably just as well, because they might get a lot of feedback about what our members might like to do to keep things interesting. We'll see which proposals get the most votes (or whatever) and take it from there. Bitu probably didn't realize how much work being top cat could be. Minnie had it so easy in comparison!

Our First Forum Discussion

Some KittyWhiskas For Catsters members have finally used our group forums. Somebody asked advice for a sudden bout with sickness. I said that it wouldn't hurt to go to the vet to see what might actually be wrong, especially while waiting to go to a good home like he is. One of our other members agreed, especially if they might become dehydrated if they lost a certain amount of water out of their system. Then the member who started the forum discussion wrote back with more details. He'd recently been fixed and not had food for two days, then somebody gave him food he wasn't used to which only complicated matters until he got some food he'd had before. We don't know if he's over his troubles yet, but we can hope for the best.
