Arrival Story:
I found him in Miami Beach a year after Hurricane Andrew. His parents lived in an alley with him and his siblings. His mom was back & white and his dad was white & black without a tail. I got really upset seeing all the homeless cats and kittens and decided to try to catch them one night. They all could run really fast. Collins didn't run as fast as all the other kittens so I was able to catch him. I was going to take him to the shelter but there weren't any open. I tried to give to away but nobody would take him. Originally I thought he was black & white too but then I washed him and found out he was white with brown/black stripes and covered in fleas. I named him Collins because I found him on 18th street Between Collins Ave & James Ave. 18 sounded stupid so Collins it was. He was so young when I got him that his name was Colleen for 2 days until I got a better look at his bits.

He lived in South Beach for his first year and was always outside on the terrace. Since he moved to NYC, he has never even bothered to look out the window.

Last Friday we found out Collins has diabetes. Last summer he praactically slept in the water bowl. But when it got cold out he stopped.
Lately he's been peeing on the bed.
The vet said his glucose was 450, normal is 70-120.
He's gotten skinny , you can feel all the bones in his back. He doesn't look good.
We decided euthanasia was best.
I read all the feline diabetes websites.
Collins isn't a hands on cat. He'll come to you if he feels like it or if you have food.
He's 13 and I couldn't imagine the last years of his life being spent getting 2 shots a day, frequent blood and urine testing and frequent trips to the vet.
He would be miserable.
Quality of life is important.
My goal when I took him from his cat family was for him to have a good, safe life away from the harm of the streets.
He had a great life but now it must end.

I will miss him.
