Leave a treat for Gem (In Loving Memory)

Gemmy Gem, The Gooch

Arrival Story:
I got my first job working at a cat sanctuary back in 1996. I loved that job. There were many ferals there, including Gem, who was more of a semi-feral, friendlier than his siblings, but not able to be touched easily. He did love affection though, and he had the sweetest and saddest little cry I'd ever heard. He was a sweet, sweet boy, but frightened. He wanted so badly to be loved. He was always sleeping out on the patio in the same cardboard box, and I'd stop and speak kindly to him when I passed by. I noticed he had terrible earmites, and that they were bothering him a great deal. I had an opportunity one day when he was resting by an empty open carrier. (We had many that we left around for the cats to sleep in). I picked him up quickly, and before he (or I)knew it, he was in the box. He screamed so hard, I almost let him out, I felt so badly for him. I took him over to the Animal Birth Control clinic where they were used to handling ferals, and they gave him an ivermectin injection and cleaned out his ears. I decided to take him home with me....not that I needed another cat. I had six at the time. I had known Gem for approximately four years by this time, and he'd been at the shelter for seven years. Initially, I thought that bringing him home had been a mistake. He was so scared and he hid under the bed most of the day. I would wake up in the middle of the night to find him up high on the furniture, and looking down at me, just staring. If I caught his eye, he'd run and hide. Over time, he changed, and became really loving. It took a long time, but almost from the beginning he loved my other cats. He needed to get love, but was afraid to allow me into his world. He had been abused by the husband, or boyfriend, of a nurse who had a family of ferals in her apartment in North Hollywood. Apparently, so the story goes, he didn't like cats, and used to kick them around. When they moved, they just put the cats out in the alley to starve. The sanctuary where I evetually would meet him, had trapped them all and taken them in. He was different than my other cats, more needy, although I don't think he realized that until the end. Over the three years I was lucky enough to have him in my home, he learned to accept love and happiness. He learned to relax and to trust, and to give love in return. I'll never understand why he was taken from me so suddenly by the merciless disease called cancer. So senseless and unfair to us and to this little guy who deserved happiness after seven lonely years in the shelter. He loved to sleep in the bed right next to me. He would jump up onto the bed, stare into my eyes, and ask me with that pitiful little cry of his to prepare his favorite sleeping spot. He had a favorite pillow he wanted to lay on, and he wanted me to position it right next to me and fluff it up, and he would sleep in total comfort and security.

We were all so happy and the cats got along really well. One day in May of 2001, about three years after Gem came to live with us, I noticed a mass on his neck. It was cancer, squamous cell carcinoma, with a very infiltrative growth pattern. I had the mass removed surgically, but his tumors developed quickly in his mouth, and within two months, he was gone. I believe he must have suffered terribly, and that I had probably tried to keep him with me for too long. His pawprint will remain forever in my heart.

After Gem died, I was so distraught that I consulted with an animal communicator. I needed to know where he was, and that he was alright, and that he wasn't angry with me. I had the session on tape, and I decided to do a website about his journey to the Rainbow Bridge, loosely based on some of what she told me. When he reached Heaven he was issued a pass that allowed him to visit Earth whenever he wanted to. This pleased Gem very much. You can take the journey with him by clicking on his pass below. Along the way he meets an assortment of characters, all of which were painstakingly designed by my friend diabella. Her site has many beautiful vintage cat graphics, and there are links to her site from "Gem's Journey".

This is the most wonderful day of my life, it's right up there with the day my Mom rescued me from those seven long years at the shelter, and brought me to my new home. I never thought anything would top that! But here I am today, marrying the most beautiful girl in the RBK.

It's been way too long since I've updated my diary. Things move so fast at the Rainbow Bridge. Since my last diary entry, I've met the sweetest girl. Her name is Sami. We met at Tabby and Jasper's wedding. She is sweet and shy, so much like me. I just knew she was my soulmate from the moment we walked in the garden. After all the years of lonliness, I just can't believe my good fortune. Last night, on a blanket under the stars and the loveliest full moon, I asked my Boo to marry me. I can't believe she said yes! She threw her arms around my neck. I am still shivering with the joy of it all. We haven't set a date yet, but I hope it will be soon. I'm shopping for the perfect ring right now!

It had been more than 5 years now since Gem had left his Earthly home. Everything flew in Heaven though, even time, so Gem didn't really have any concept of just how long it had been. To him, it seemed like only earlier that day that he'd lavished in the soft thick fur of his big brofur Whiskey-Lee.

It was the Holidays and Gem was busy planning his social calendar, and he wanted to deliver presents to his family. He liked to travel light, and he had so many Brofurs and Sisfurs now that he couldn't bring too many gifts. Probably just a Greenie here, and a Greenie there....maybe a fur mouse or two. Nothing that his Mom would notice, he didn't want to confuse her.

He'd been so busy that he hadn't read the latest issue of the Earthly News, so he'd had no idea that Whiskey-Lee had suddenly taken ill.

He was taking a break and enjoying an eggnog, when he heard the trumpets sound. The new arrivals were coming! He knew by the sound of the trumpet, that today someone important was arriving, a great warrior.

He washed his face quickly, and smoothed his fur. As he approached the gates, he was blinded by the brightest halo he'd ever seen. He couldn't make out the face at first, but he knew the voice!

Gem and Whiskey-Lee, Gem couldn't believe they were together! They found Farley at his slick new bachelor digs, and the three of them stayed up all night cuddled tightly to each other, and just reminiscing about the old days. It was a bittersweet time, they were happy to be together, but Whiskey was worried about their Mom. She'd been devastated by his death, and he wished he could be there to comfort her.

Gem reassured him that she would be OK, and promised Whiskey that they would visit her to drop off their gifts.
