Well, things were a lot worse than I expected. And the first part of treatment was a nightmare for me.
The only good news is that even though my left eye is also damaged, I have not lost any vision in that eye, and laser surgery will help. it does not cure the problem, but it will prevent further damage from the veins and blood vessels that are affected in that eye.
However, my right eye is pretty serious. There is only a 10% chance that with treatment, any of the vision will be restored. It is much more advanced than the other eye. That was very difficult to hear. I still cannot read magazines, books, etc. and may never be able to again. The loss of vision is in an area where when I try to use both eyes the letters look squiggly and I just can't read. And one eye reading does not work for me, either. Treatment will only stop the damaged blood vessels from further leaking.
I can read email because I can enlarge the print to 24 bold font and my right eye can see that clearly, and I can elnarge web pages to a readable size. No restrictions on driving. However, since the damage is more serious, I have a bigger chance of completely loosing my vision in that eye.
This is a complication from diabetes. I can stop the progression of the disease by having a seriously tight blood sugar level all the time. Not as easy as it sounds. Don't want to get into all of that.
I had a lot of tests today, with a reaction in my arm from the dye injection, which is normal for me. It is swollen, hard, itchy and painful. That will go away in a few days. Thank the Lord it was NOT a systemic reaction!
The first part of treatment today was a shot of a new drug into the back of my eye. Yes, a shot, I completely fell apart. Sobbed like a baby. That is the only thing in the world that that truly TERRIFIES me - like my worst nightmare. I didn't want to handle that. Took me a while to calm down. But eventually I did let the doctor do it. And it was horrible. Even though my eye was numb, it hurt, and I got really nauseous. BUT, with the help of the Lord, I made it through. The shot only takes a few seconds. But it was a few seconds of terror for me
.So next Monday I will have laser treatment to my left eye, the following week to my right eye. Then follow ups to see if I need more laser treatments. Then I go back in 3 months to make sure my eyes are stable, so I can get new glasses.
The worst of it is over. Please pray that I do NOT NEED another of those shots, and that I will be calm for the laser surgery the next two Mondays.
So it was a very difficult day. I am thankful that I have not lost MORE or ALL of my vision in my right eye. Very Thankful. I can still drive. I really do appreciate your prayers.
Love,
Laura-Lynne
