Arrival Story:
We euthanized our 15 year old Maine Coon and told the vet we wanted another shelter Maine Coon, but an adult (read - we live in Maine, shelter coons are Maine Coons to us, not purebred, but pure Maine). One week later, we were told there was one at the shelter for us to we went to the shelter to find it. We went thru all of them, not finding any Maine Coons at all, and in the last room in the last cage, we found a 4 month old Coon kitten. Although we wanted an adult, we immediately fell for him, but he had a "Pending Adoption" tag on his cage. We inquired at the desk and they told us if he wasn't picked up by noon the next day, we could have him. On the way home, we decided to name him Winston if we could have him. The next morning I called the vet to ask about the adult Coon and they gave me the number of the girl who worked there. Upon talking with her - we figured out that the one she had held was indeed the little kitten we fell in love with! It had meant to be for sure as he was the ONLY one we wanted! I immediately drove back over to pick him up and he has been our joy ever since. Having just cared for two elderly cats through their final days, having a lively kitten in the house was just what we needed to remind us of the wonderful lives our other babies had with us. Today Winston is 13 years old, and is still acting just like he was when we got him - always a kitten!

Bio:
The story is that he was left on the side of a busy road in a lakeside community. Someone saw people drop him out of the car. They were probably up here for the summer and got a kitten for the kids. It took a couple of days for them to catch him and get him to the shelter. He came into the shelter the same day that we euthanized Chester. He had a piece taken out of his ear, so he definitely has had one of his life reduced. The first night, he curled up around my head and kneaded in my hair. He has done that every night since. Only my head, never my husbands. He follows me around the house all day when I'm home. He doesn't sleep nearly as much as a "normal" cat. If we have company, he stays awake until they leave. He loves DH and I, but doesn't like other people. He will sometimes let them pet him, but mostly he hisses at them. He doesn't bite, but it always scares people. He doesn't like change at all, not one bit. He is a Brown Classic Tabby. His fur is exceptionally silky and his tongue is rougher than any kitty I've had. You do not want him licking you much as it will start to hurt. He has the typical Maine Coon fur, his tail is a bit short and his paws are huge and very well tufted. A completely indoor cat, he has his winter coat in the summer when the AC is on, and his summer coat in the winter when the heat is on. He doesn't lay in your lap, but like to lay next to you with his head on you leg. If I cook peas, he will be all over me. I throw them down the hallway and runs to get them and gobbles them up. If I cook chicken and peas - he tries to climb in the plate and cuffs at me while I'm eating.

Winston - The Life of A Solitary Cat

My First Day on Catster

Today Mom started my very own Internet page! Wow! She doesn't even have a page for herself let alone me! She chose one of her favorite photos that doesnt' even show my handsome face. She has just always loved that photo because of Will Smith and the gun pointing right at us. And I love the photo because it shows me laying with my Dad's stinky sneakers! Yay! I love those!

So while she's been on the computer, I've been napping on the kitchen table. I'm sure if anyone ever saw how much I'm up on the table and the counters they would never eat here! Dad and Mom don't seem to mind though, although sometimes Mom lets me know that lying down is OK, but sitting with my little butt on the table is kinda gross.

So, anyway, I just got up to engage in one of my favorite activities - lying in Mom's lap while she types. I don't ask for permission or anything, I just walk on in and settle down. If she ignores me, I headbutt her and swat at her hands while she types. She's getting ready to put my back on the table so I gotta run!

Two Paws up for today! Your Buddy, Winston
