Arrival Story: Back when my husband and I started dating, we decided to adopt a kitty from the local shelter. My husband and I had met when we both worked at a retail store...I, in the fine jewelry department, and he, in the men's department. Since he lived in an apartment at the time, we thought a cat would be the most logical pet. I thought "24 Karat" would be a cute name for a yellow kitty. We went to the shelter to find our perfect yellow kitty! When we got to the shelter, however, there was only one yellow kitty.. This big yellow kitty was in a cage with this scrawny little kitten, hissing at her because she was trying to get to the food...! Needless to say, we picked the scrawny kitty to bring home.. I mentioned to my husband that we couldn't name her Karat since she wasn't yellow, but he insisted that he liked the name... and the name stuck...!
Karat was my little shadow for 10 years.. She always let me carry her like a baby, and cuddled me when I needed it.. She was a wonderful addition to any family. Karat didn't like it when my husband and I carried a little puppy in one day.. She didn't want anything to do with her.. She did eventually learn to tolerate her, but Karat was very regal, and liked being the only pet.. She didn't like dogs and any other cats in her domain. Karat gave us a deep appreciation for cats.. My husband and I had always considered ourselves "dog" people, but this little sweetie melted our hearts where a cat in the house is now considered a necessity! She always waited for me to come home from work and greeted me with lots of love and attention... What else could anyone ask for? In hindsight, I am so happy that we rescued her from that shelter... I shudder to think what might have happened if we hadn't arrived to take her home! She was very small by cat standards and the most she ever weighed was 7 pounds...
I miss my baby everyday... I know she's in heaven playing at the rainbow bridge in perfect health and waiting for us to be with her again... I still love and miss her so much that I can hardly type this without crying!..... I just hope we made her 10 years on this earth as loving and carefree as we possibly could.. She left us way to young, and we miss her very, very much!

Bio: Karat was the sweetest and most loving cat anyone could have asked for.. She was a mommy's girl the entire 10 years she was with us.. Karat got really sick when she was about 2 years old with feline asthma.. the condition went undiagnosed, however, the vet did put her on prednisone for her breathing problems.. She passed away suddenly in May of this year, and since then we have discovered that long term use of prednisone causes serious side effects! Please research all options before choosing a method of care for your pet!
