indoors Arrival Story: I adopted Kitty.com from the shelter in June 2002. (She was previously named Kitty.) She was about 5 years old at that time. She was in isolation at the shelter, recovering from ringworm. She still had bald, scabby patches. She'd purr when I petted her head, but hiss if I touched her anywhere else. The shelter supervisor came to speak with me, and mentioned the hissing. I said "That's o.k., she doesn't know me yet. She's not biting or scratching me or anything." I thought she was sweet, and said so. They supervisor's eyes welled up with tears, and she said "No one says that about her. They think she's mean because she hisses." That cinched it. I was taking her home.
It took work, and the first few months I often went to work bleeding and scratched. In the beginning, I could only touch her on her head with my right hand. But we built trust. It took longer for her to adapt to her feline companions. She hated the other cats. She still doesn't like them, but tolerates them well. She's a beautiful, sweet cat who loves to play, get petted, and sit in laps. She also likes to wear toys like hats! She takes toys with her two front paws and pushes them up on her head and holds them there.
