Arrival Story:
One day in the summer of 1997, I left the farm to go into town and get my mail. I couldn't have been gone for more than 10 minutes. When I returned, there in my mud room was a cardboard cat carrier (such as one gets from the vet) and inside that carrier, was Katie. She was very pregnant. Ten days later, I heard tiny mewing at 5:30 AM, and thought, good, the kittens have arrived. It turned out one kitten had sort-of arrived. I found Katie walking down the hall, looking distraught, with one very irate kitten hanging from her rear by its umbilical cord. I put Katie in a drawer and told, "Just push, I'll handle it." She gave birth to three more kittens, and from then on, fed them and left the rest to me. I was allowed to do anything I wanted with those kittens--except take them out of the drawer. Katie never even learned to pick up a kitten and carry it. She'd just lead me to a place she wanted them to be and then yowl until I brought them. The whole family still lives here, much to Katie's disgust. To this day, she will walk up to her 17 pound son Vinny and smack him for no obvious reason, apart from he should get a job and move out!

Katie has an autoimmune disease which makes her allergic to dental plaque. After repeated cleanings, tooth pullings, medications, specialists and whatnot, she finally ended up losing all her teeth. For a while, she caught mice but only managed to get them wet and annoyed. Then she hit upon the idea of catching them, and dropping them in front of her son Vinny, who would kill them. Then she'd take the dead mouse away and try to eat it. Now she manages to kill them herself somehow, but of course without any teeth she can't eat them. I guess this is just as well...
