Arrival Story:
My husband and I had offered to take in a pure-bred that was going to be cast out of its home or killed if a home wasn't found before the couple moved. We set ourselves up as a last resort if a home wasn't found. After we got excited about the new addition they found a home for the kitty. So, we headed to the local shelter and adopted our beautiful new baby Nigel. He was curled up in the last cage and when we opened the door he jumped out into my husband's arms. We brought him home that day.

Bio:
We were told by Nigel's foster mom that he had allergies which needed to be controlled. Little did we know that his problems went much deeper than that. Within two days Nigel started to develop a horrible odor from his breath to go along with the severe sneezing and runny nose (to put it mildly!) We took him immediately to the vet and he was diagnosed with gingivitis/stomatitis and severe pharyngitis. Basically his whole mouth and throat were covered with lesions, swelling and redness, with a lot of pain thrown in the mix! We immediately put him on a strict regimen of antibiotics, corticosteroids, and monitoring. These things helped, but not near to the extent they should. Nigel had 6 teeth extracted in the beginning to combat the stomatitis. He is the greatest patient in the world (he puts up with a lot!) but he will absolutely not tolerate his CET oral rinse. He puts those claws to use! Not that I blame him. It's been a long and bumpy road for Nigel. He's had 3 separate surgeries to remove more teeth, because the drugs just don't work. He gained a little weight from the steroids, and we're still trying to work that off! His last surgery took his last remaining teeth with the exception of his lower canines. Now we're just monitoring the redness there. The rest of his mouth looks wonderful!

Sickly Kitty:
We aren't completely sure what the direct cause of Nigel's difficulties is. A major possibility is that Nigel is afflicted with the Calici virus, considering that he suffers from both upper respiratory infections and infections in his mouth. *update 7/18/07- Calici has pretty much been ruled out, but Nigel will have to lose more teeth. See diary entry below for more details* Nigel needs lots of purrayers so that he can get better. No matter what the cause, he will always have to fight his stomatitis, and he may end up losing more, if not all, of his teeth. He's a little trooper and he deserves to feel good! He'll always be having a good time no matter what his problems are. He never seems to let anything bother him and he's a great lesson to us all! He's so carefree and just thankful to be able to play and run and love on his humans, and he's honery to boot! More update: *12/4/07 Nigel has had more surgeries and seems to be doing well. All he has left are his lower canines and the occassional tiny incisor tooth. He's having a little bit of trouble adjusting. It just feels weird not to have teeth, and he'll kind of get his lip stuck on his lower teeth which makes him make a funny "Elvis lip" face. He's getting better at eating, although he does quite a bit of drooling now. Now we just see if he keeps doing better and if he'll get to keep his last few teeth!

Ok, you've probably heard Sammy's lame story about being scared of the dark and all, and falling out the window one night and getting lost. Well, here's the real story. We were sitting in the back bedroom. Sammy leaned against the screen with his big 'ole butt and he pushed the screen out! It just went POP and then fell outside, just like that. He immediately freaked out and started whining that it looked dark outside, and I said, "You're such a chicken!" He whined some more, so I just walked right by him and went outside. Just like that! I wasn't scared. I knew there was a big, big world out there, and I wanted to see it! I know he followed me, because I heard his big butt plop on the ground and he grunted a little bit, because he's too fat (note from Mom: Nigel's not exactly skinny...) I stayed out there for hours! I had a blast. I caught a mouse the size of a chihuahua... actually... it WAS a chihuahua. And all the lady cats in their windows were cat-callin' me. It was great! I hummed Stray Cat strut the whole time. Of course, I could tell Mom was a little bit worried, so after I made her suffer for a little bit, I went back home. For her sake, of course. I wasn't scared. Honest...

Luv,

Nigey Bear

Mom's note: Nigel and Sammy were outside for a maximum amount of time of 20 minutes. Of course, it was agony to me, also. But they were BOTH very ready to go back inside, and neither one liked the night life very well... no matter what he might say. :)

New things!

There are several new things going on with our family. We have new birdies. Yep... A birdie outside hatched her eggs. Her name is Penny and her husbands name is Pongo. They had a baby. One of them died. Mommy was sad. I was sad because that brought it to the possibility of there only being one baby bird to try to eat. :) But, check out Teddy's page if you want to see video of the baby birdie and Teddy. Mom says he got to star in his own nature documentary.

Another thing is Mommy is working a lot on our pages. She wants to make some slideshows with us and some cool music. She's added these cool playlists to our pages so you can choose the song you want to listen to, and it's random, so you never know what you're going to get when you go to my page. The videos are new, too. Mom is constantly following me around now with the stupid camera, begging me to do something interesting. I think it's funny to make her beg. MOL! Anyway, I hope you enjoy our new stuff, and keep a lookout for more! Love ya, Catsters!

My pal Teddy, or O'Teddy for Patty's Day, is at it again! Check out his page and see the cool video he did of me and the lovely Amelia Rose doing a cool dance for St. Patty's! I sure can move. MOL! Thanks a bunch, Teddy! What a cool pal, huh?

Unfortunately, I'll be a away from Catster for a few days. Now don't worry... I'll be back on Wednesday night. Meowmy is going away and won't have computer access so that she can do her Catster slave duties of catering to us. MOL! But I'll see everyone when she's back. Love ya!
