Playing and wrestling with the other kittens
Being restrained to be medicated
Kitty fishing pole with feathers
Mal is one of four kittens captured along with their mother in the parking lot at my office. They came to the attention of some people who were concerned they would be run over by cars and who then called Animal Control. Animal Control would take the kittens to a shelter where they would be put down if not adopted within 2 weeks. Since there are so many kittens in shelters right now and these guys are somewhat timid/feral, we were afraid that their chances for adoption would not be good. Instead of turning the kittens over to Animal Control, we brought them home with the intent of getting them fixed and released on my property out in the country where no one would bother them. However, we discovered that some of them were showing symptoms of upper respiratory infection, so we began treating them all with antibiotics. As we handled them twice daily to medicate, we discovered that they are acclimating to human touch nicely and will likely make good house pets. The kittens are being kept in a cage on our back deck while being medicated, but will going to a no-kill shelter in the hopes of finding loving homes. However, after all the time and effort put into these kittens, I'm not sure I can give them all up, so it is likely one will stay here as an outside cat with Anatefka and that one will likely be Mal since I already paid to have him neutered when we were originally going to release them to the wild and because he seems like one of the best suited to survive outdoors. This was our first foray into cat rescue and will be our last as it is too emotionally draining.
Although I've listed his color as black, Mal has some very subtle tabby markings that can be seen with enough light. It's far less noticeable than the tabby markings on littermates Amy and Henry. Mal is very curious, and he and Henry as a team were the first kittens to be caught in the humane trap. Mal is one of the largest of the litter and also one of the most active and rambunctious with his siblings. When introduced to the kitty fishing pole, he was the only one who interested in attacking it, and he got pretty ferocious.
