Growing Up

Please watch out!

I was recently very, very sick. Something that did not seem serious at first became very serious. Momma has had kitties for decades, but she never saw anything quite like this before. Let me tell you what happened, and if it starts happening with you, please get to the vet right away.

First let me tell you that I am an indoor only kitty, I have all my shots, no new kitties have been introduced in here.

Here were the symptoms and how it progressed. Here's why -- you may hear about this from other kitties and I want you to tell them to get to the vet right away. I'm telling you this because a) my vet mentioned that he was "seeing a lot of this" and b) oddly enough, a good friend of mine -- who lives in Illinois (and I am in Texas, so I didn't give it to her kitty) -- one of her kitties suddenly developed the exact same symptoms in the same order! Because she knew about me, she went to the vet right away and they gave her the amoxicillin, and her kitty is doing great and did not get as sick as I did. Oh, and her vet in Illinois also mentioned she was "seeing a lot of this".

Here were the symptoms and how it progressed.:
It started with a sneezing fit. I had an extremely pink nose (normally, it is nearly white, it is such a pale pink). Then, I think it was Christmas day, I suddenly sneezed and sneezed and sneezed. I mean, non-stop for a while.

We have another kitty who sneezes when my house needs vacuuming, so Momma vacuumed right away. I STOPPED sneezing. I only had that one sneezing fit.

I seemed fine after that, although my nose did stay somewhat brighter than usual. I was eating and drinking and playing.

A few days later, my eye gunked up. Momma has saline drops from the vet (I had had an eye problem in October, and we got the eye drops then, just saline) -- so we flushed my eyes. Problem disappeared. I still seemed fine.

But then, close to New Year's (maybe Thursday of that week), I became clingy. I am not a lap cat. I started climbing in Momma's lap. Sleeping more. Not running to eat dinner anymore.

By Saturday, it was obvious I was terribly sick. I just laid on the bed all day, on the pillow. I no longer would play with anything, would not come for my meals. Ate very, very little, and only canned food, not my kibble. Barely drinking. I mewed kinda pitifully, every so often. I was hurting.

By Sunday, I was only eating wet food mixed up real soupy with water. From my Momma's fingers. I was still eating, but only about half the food I normally eat. . Still using the litter box, but obviously not as much.

Momma had another cat, years ago, that used to get infections (from wrestling battles with the other boy) -- this was almost identical to how he would behave when he had one. Momma's guess at that time was that I had a URI, probably a fever, and needed antibiotics for sure. But she was so scared. She didn't sleep a wink that night, watching over me.

We called the vet first thing Monday morning, and they got us in right away, thank God. I got a shot of antibiotics and fever reducer, because I did, indeed have a fever. And the medicines seemed to work their magic almost immediately.
---
Now my friend in Illinois, her kitty developed the same symptoms in the same order, like a day after I had gone to the vet. The sneezing fit - that stopped, then the goopy eye, then sort of not being as active (her kitty is an older gentleman, so it was not as obvious as it was with me). The only difference was that her kitty also developed a messy, snotty nose. I did not do that at all, although the vet said I was congested, just not "leaking".

Momma is no vet, obviously, but she sure has had kitties for a very long time. She have even (decades ago) had kitties with URIs before. Although the symptoms all sorta point to just a URI, it is just odd the sequence and way they developed. And for us two kitties -- in different states, it either originally was, or quickly turned into, some kind of bacterial infection.

So please, please -- if anybody else mentions these weird symptoms, tell them to go to the vet as soon as possible.

I am doing much, much better now. I just don't want this to happen to anybody else, especially since a couple vets have said they are "seeing a lot of this"

What I am thankful for - tagged

My dear friend, KC, tagged me for Thanksgiving. I have so many things I am thankful for, it will be so hard to pick only 5, but here goes:

1. I am thankful that I have a forever home, and that I found it while I was so little and outside on my own. Momma found me when I was only about 8 weeks old and took me in. So I have grown up in a nice, safe place with love and tender care. I am thankful that I have a warm place to sleep and stay, that I am safe from the dangers of the street, and that there is PLENTY of good food to eat. My Momma and the Painter love me so much, I am very happy.

2. I am thankful for my adopted kitty-dad, Tommy, who took me under his wing and taught me how to be a cat! He taught me how to play, since I did not know how, and has given me extra special love all along.

3. I am thankful for my Uncle Felix, who has bathed me like a momma cat ever since I was a little boy, and still does, even though I am now much bigger than he is.

4. I am thankful for my newest brother, Chumley, who moved in with us last New Years. He has become such a great buddy for me, we play and romp all the time.

5. I am thankful for all my Catster Friends, too, especially KC -- who help each other out with love and affection all the time. I am grateful that even though I am often away from Catster for a while, I am not forgotten. I especially am thankful for my special friends of Rufus and his family, and Guy and his family, too. Gosh, I have so MANY wonderful friends here, please know I think of you all the time and you are never far from my heart. Thank you all, I love you so.

It is already Thanksgiving, it would not be fair for me to tag 5 more friends! But if you read this, take just a minute and remember all the wonderful things, cats, and people we have to be thankful for.

Love,
Buster

It's my Birthday!!

Hello effurbody! Guess what? Today is my 2nd birthday!

Every one here is SO happy, especially me. I know I get tons of attention on my birthday and I just love it. Momma is so happy, because when she rescued me I was so little and skinny, I was just a little baby. Every morning she used to run to go check on me to make sure I was still okay.

But I am FINE! I am a big, healthy boy now.

This morning, for breakfast I shared a special Merrick's Grammy's Pot Pie and I got myself lots of Pit'r Pats, too!

I got a new shirt for my birthday, one with stripes on it. Momma had to buy a size Large for me this year, oh my! But I think this may be my last time in clothes, I sure don't seem to like it anymore. Guess I am just too grown up, now. Just to please Momma, though, I wore it just long enough for her to get a picture (up later).

Best of all, I got a new wand toy. You see, birthday wand toys are very special. Other kitties play with them, but I don't. I got a red one last year for my birthday, and I don't PLAY with it. It is fluffy and soft, and every day I tote it around in my mouth while I sing with joy, like a kitty security blanket. It still looks like brand new, I hope to keep it always.

My new one is light blue and fluffy! I got a good start on turning it into a special object, too, because right away I had to start in grooming it. I like to groom my wand toys.

For party favors, Momma got us all one Yeoww Banana each, too. What a great day I am having. I'm going to have some more Merrick's for supper tonight, too, but I haven't picked out a flavor yet.

Thank you for sharing my second birthday with me, my Catster friends.
Love and purrs,
Buster
