Arrival Story:
My partner and I had been on a trip to Mt. Lassen with our other dog, Kaya. After rescuing Kaya out of a river earlier in the day, we were tired and wanted to get home. Somehow, through what I can only call divine intervention, I turned down a small country road at the last minute, not really knowing why. After about a mile, my partner said, "look at that little coyote in the field!" The road was barely wide enough for 2 Model-T's to pass, and there was no traffic, so I stopped. We watched for a couple of minutes... at first we thought she was just playing, but in fact, she was foraging for BUGS, and could only take about 3 - 5 steps before falling over. After watching this, I started to cry and drove away feeling helpless (we lived in a one-bedroom apartment where NO pets were allowed and already had one dog and 3 cats!). After about 30 seconds, my partner chimes in and says, "that chicken from last night is in the ice chest." I slammed on the brakes and could not turn the car around fast enough... God sent us down this road to save her (I firmly believe this!). Paul coaxed her over with chicken pieces, and she timidly approached, but ate heartily. She was less than 4 months old (still had puppy teeth), and was SEVERELY emaciated. NO WAY she was staying there! We got a white towel out of the trunk of the car and Paul laid her on it across his lap. About one minute later, she just collapsed in surrender (finally safe), but the towel was spotted EVERYWHERE with blood. There we were, two grown men, crying like babies because some heartless goon abandoned this young dog in the middle of nowhere. I backtracked to Auburn, CA to get to the freeway as fast as I could. She needed a Vet, and NOW! It is now 4:58 p.m. as we drive down Hwy. 49, and Paul says, "there is a Vet's office, and the door is open!" I was driving on the shoulder to get to the driveway entrance while throwing credit cards at my partner. He ran in with her, and I followed. We saw a wonderful man named Dr. Tom Sheriff (Complete with a Sheriff's badge!), and he exclaimed, "what happened to this dog? HOW DID SHE END UP LIKE THIS?" We then told him about how we found her (both of us were still sobbing). Dr. Sheriff took our newly named baby into the treatment room... She had over 1,000 ticks on her (NO JOKE!). She weighed just under 11 pounds and was SEVERELY anemic, had roundworm, tapeworm and pneumonia! We were told that if we would have left her there, she would have been dead within one week. THis man was so sweet that he did almost $400 worth of tests and treatment on her for $103.00, simply because we rescued her. Dr. Sheriff is our hero (and Cinnamon's, too!) She just turned 8 years old, and she is the love of our lives. She sleeps with us every night and has her own SUV! (Talk about a spoiled dog!) One of my dads actually got into the Pet industry with a direct sales company BECAUSE OF ME! The company he works for guarantees everything they sell 100%, and they have PURE pet food, too. Everybody won this time... Also, please visit my dear friend Faith on Dogster. Search for "Faith the 2-legged dog" and say hello to her and her owner Jude... and tell them Cinnamon and her dad sent you! Have a wonderful day, and thank you for visiting! Hope to chat soon!
