Arrival Story:
I started to volunteer at my local Cats Protection Homing Centre in July 2004, just after my old cat - who was living with my parents - died. After a few weeks the staff told me to avoid one of the cats, he was hissing and attacking everyone who went near him. I'd been making a fuss out of another cat when this big black cat came to the front of the pen and said "mew?" Obviously I went in, and he was purring and curled up on my lap. When a staff member came in, they were stunned - this was the vicious beastie! I only had a upper floor studio flat and couldn't keep him, but grew very attached for the few weeks it took to find him a home. He eventually went to a home with some small children. Six months later when I did the follow-up phone call, the dad told me that Elgar had run away shortly after they started letting him outside and had never seen him again. I presumed he'd been run over. Cut to 18 months later; I was looking to buy my own place and wanted a garden so I could have a cat. I was telling the Centre manager - "I want an independent cat like Elgar, one I can leave on his own when I go out to work." And would you believe - just as I found my flat, Elgar was found by the RSPCA! His microchipped is registered to Cats Protection and as soon as the call came in, they told me and I said I'd take him. No second thoughts! He stayed with a friend of mine for two months while the sale went through, and now Elgar lives with me - exactly what he wanted all along.

Bio:
Recently, Elgar got diagnosed with diabetes and kidney problems, meaning two injections and a tablet every day! I sometimes wonder whether he saw this coming, and was determined to be my cat because he knew I was a sucker who wouldn't mind all the vet's trips, medical attention, and trauma of having to deal with hypo attacks! But he's adorable and it's all worthwhile.
