Arrival Story: Percy and I were attending a cat show at Seattle Center the weekend of Feb 9th. Purrfect Pals rescue was there. I walked by a cage with this little black Persian in it that was all shaved down except for his head, tail and legs. He looked like a stuffed toy! During the weekend of the show I kept going over and visiting him and everytime they'd take him out for me to cuddle he'd tread on my chest and purr like MAD!! And when I walked past the cage at one point he meowed REALLY loud and reached his paw out to me!!! And I was about fifteen feet away!!! I decided Saturday to adopt him but let him stay with the shelter till Sunday as he was definitely attracting a lot of attention to their booth. After all, it's not often you see an adorable kitty wearing a TURTLENECK!!!
Bio: I was told he was found as a stray in Everett, WA and was so badly matted that they had to shave him down. He was so skinny when I got him that you could feel the microchip in his shoulder - poor baby has no fat! He was named "Fang" because he only had one fang - not sure if he lost it or he was born that way. You only notice it's not there when he grabs a mouthful of kibble and half of it falls out of his mouth!
Forums Motto: THANK YOU PURRFECT PALS RESCUE!!! :)
Spooky left me today. Several months ago he was diagnosed with kidney disease but with changes to his diet and supplements from the vet he'd been doing well. He's gained weight and he wasn't living by the water bowl. He really seemed like he was going to be OK. But then last week he got a sinus infection. The infection cleared quickly with meds from the vet but Spooky stopped eating and quickly went downhill. The vet re-ran his numbers with a blood test and there were far, far worse than when he was first diagnosed with kidney disease. For 10 days I force fed him and for the past couple of days I was giving him SubQ fluids. Last night he was falling whenever he'd walk - and crying. This morning I woke up and he was just laying there gasping. We went to the vet and his temp was down to 98.5. His gasping was getting worse and I just couldn't let him be in pain anymore.
Goodbye, little Spooky. We only had eight months together. I hope you know how much you were loved. By me, by the other pets, and by all your friends at the shelter. Because of you I got involved with Purrfect Pals cat rescue, where I adopted you from. My dedication to the shelter will be your legacy. Because of you lots of kitties will get forever homes. I'll miss your sweet face - your little button nose and your beautiful gold eyes. I'll miss how you loved snuggling up to me - always curling up with me on the futon or hopping onto my lap at my desk. I'll miss your sweet trilling as you closed your eyes and treaded on my lap - looking at me with such love. I adored you, my little man. I just wish we'd had more time :( I never thought I'd lose you this soon...
Mom's now volunteering with the shelter I came from - Purrfect Pals (http://www.purrfectpals.org). She works different events like festivals and stuff and talks to people about the shelter kitties, about spaying and neutering and also gets donations for the kitties at the shelter.
Well this past weekend she worked her first adopt-a-thon event. She and two other volunteers had nine kittens and six adult cats with them. Two other shelters were there as well. Seven kittens were adopted out and guess what - one of the adult kitties!
And guess what even more? MOMMY was the one who convinced the adopter that "Buttons" was the kitty for her. Buttons came from a house with 37 other cats. She's nine years old, hardly has any teeth and treads like mad when you pat her - she SOOOO needed someone to love!
The woman who was talking to Mommy was looking at the cats and kittens and asked Mommy which were better to adopt. Mom told her about me and Percy - how we were both adults when she found us - and what loves we are. Then she took Buttons out - who started purring like CRAZY and sat her head down on the lady's shoulder. That was all it took - she said "This is MY kitty!" and adopted her - YAY!!!!!!!
Mom was so happy that she found me because Purrfect Pals was at the show that day. So a couple months ago she decided to start volunteering with them. She thought it'd be a great way to pay them back for taking me in from another shelter and giving me a better chance at finding a great home. She's working different events with them and talks about all the kitties at the shelter, about how keeping cats indoors is the way to go and tips on diet and anything else people might ask. She's having a lot of fun with this and making a lot of really great friends with the volunteers. This past weekend she got to work with three of the volunteers that were there at the show where she met me. She thought that was really cool and they loved hearing updates about me. We're gonna have a little party soon at the house so I'll get to see a lot of my shelter friends that took such good care of me. Won't they be impressed with all this fur I've grown back!
So not only did adopting me bring her an adorable kitty (ME!) it brought her a bunch of new friends PLUS gave her an opportunity to volunteer and help other kitties needing homes just like I did - isn't that great??!!
