Arrival Story:
We never planned on owning 3 cats... I went to the local humane society to help my neighbor find a kitten. The only kittens that they had were still too young to be considered adoptable, so they were kept in a separate room away from the other animals. While my neighbor was looking at them, I noticed another cat in a nearby cage. He was old, tired-looking, and really mangy but he was rubbing up against the bars for attention. This sweet cat weighed on my mind after I had returned home and I wondered why this cat was being kept separate from the others so I called back to the humane society later and spoke to a nice woman at the front desk. She explained to me that the cats that aren't considered ideal candidates for adoption are kept separate until they are ready to be moved with the other animals in the building that are up for adoption or they are transferred to another location to be assessed . I asked her where they would be sending the older cat and why he wasn't considered adoptable. She went and got his folder and explained to me that he wasn't considered adoptable because he had heart problems and a digestive system problem and that he wasn't expected to live much longer. I was very upset about hearing this but understood that this particular humane society was a "no-kill" shelter, so I asked the girl if he was going to be sent somewhere where he would be adopted out soon or given a foster home until the inevitable happened so that he wouldn't spend the remainder of his time in a cage. To my shock, she then told me that although they were a "no-kill" shelter, that they would often transfer cats such as him to other shelters that would euthanize animals considered un-adoptable. She told me that the cat that I was asking about was scheduled to be transferred tomorrow afternoon (having spent his week that they are obligated to hold animals for before transferring), and that he would most likely be euthanized. I didn't have time to get to the shelter that day before they were going to close so I told her to mark in large letters on his folder that I would be in to adopt him in the morning and to make sure that he was not transferred anywhere. Something inside of me just knew this was the right thing to do even though the sensible side of me was rejecting the idea.

Bio:
Ping was named so by my husband, it is chinese and it means "peace". We didn't think that he had much time left, his heart condition was echoed by my own vet that gave him a few months left due to its severity. He was also diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, ear mites, a severe flea infestation and most probably roundworms. He was also severely underweight. He was tested free of any of the more terrible kitty diseases, thankfully, so after a good bath, flea treatment, and de-worming, he was safe to be around our other cats. He had a wonderful disposition, but other than an occasional love-attack would pretty much stick to himself. He was extremely weak and slept constantly, he seemed on the brink of death already. When he did have a stool it was completely liquid and he was constantly dehydrated. His appetite was low, and though he seemed happy to be safe and comfortable, I didn't have much hope. I was happy to have given him a warm bed, and a comfortable window to watch birdies from for a little while before he passed on. Then... something amazing happened, Ping's appetite got better and he started taking more interest in the things around him. With love, a stable home, and several different kinds of antibiotics, Ping was getting better. We have had Ping since September of 2004, his age when we adopted him was estimated to be 10 years old. He now has no detectable heart problem, which was most likely originally caused by malnutrition. His irritable bowel syndrome was most likely caused by stress and is now completely under control with no medications. The only time he shows signs of problems now are when he gets stressed, such as a visit to the vet, and this clears up within a day. It was a very slow process, but he has come to love and trust us. He went from being mostly solitary to following us around the house and sleeping near or on us every day or night. When I think back about what would have happened if I hadn't called back to ask about him, it makes me very sad. Ping has enriched our lives and he has taught us that there is always room for hope, no matter how dire things seem.
