Arrival Story:
Carlos came to the animal hospital I work at through a local shelter to have his urine checked. He was returned to the shelter for supposed house soiling, and if he did not have an underlying medical reason (i.e. a urinary tract infection) for the behavior he would be euthanised. Having Carlos there cowering in a cage, eyes wide in terror was not working in his favor at finding a home either. But when anyone would stop to pet him and open the cage, it was quickly apparent that he was a sweetheart and won the hearts of the entire staff. A urinalysis was done as was standard protocol, and we were all relieved to see there was a medical reason for his behavior, there was glucose in his urine indicating diabetes. Further bloodwork was done ruling out diabetes but clearly showing earl kidney disease. We convinced our boss to let us adopt him since we were all enamored and could closely monitor him best there, and have thanked god every day that he was saved. Never in the past 2 year has he ever had a problem with glucose in his urine again. That fluke test result saved his life.
