Arrival Story: In August 2006 I moved from a small 1-bedroom apartment to a larger townhome. By the end of the month I had settled in and decided it was time to adopt a pair of cats. I visited PetSmart because I heard The Almost Home Foundation had adoption drives on Saturdays. I knew I wanted a cat, not a kitten. Cats don't need to be trained, their personalities have developed, and they are more relaxed. Most importantly I wanted to give a cat a second chance to have a home. I arrived when people were setting up. I had already decided to adopt Sarge. Since he was declawed, his cat-sibling also needed to be declawed. Lena was the only other declawed cat there. Originally she was a stray and was adopted by a couple who were going to have a baby. But when she was one year old she had to be returned because the new child was very allergic to cats. Even if there were other choices, I knew I had to bring her home too.

Bio: Hello! My name is Lena. I love to play. I can jump over four feet along a wall to swat at the red light bug. Daddy says I am The Great Tabby Hunter, well I would be if I still had my front claws. I'm smart enough to stay inside unlike my big step-brother Sarge, but I will sometimes follow him into the garage. I love being brushed and I demand Daddy get down on the floor to brush me several times a day. I like being held but not to be petted, but to sleep. When Daddy lies down I will sometimes jump on top of him to make biscuits or take a nap. I'm so happy I have a furever home with him. When his friends come over, I just stay in the back. I'm a one-person kitty. Gotta go now, the evil chipmunk is outside!

Dad was gone for a few days. I knew it would happen. After him being home for 6 weeks I think we were due for a break. I sat in my new usual spot for a while, even when the neighbors came over with their yappy dog. Still, after a day or two I really started to miss Daddy and was happy when he came home. And guess what, he got a job that should last for a few months starting tomorrow. So he's going to be gone again. Well I'll just have to spend more time with him now.

Daddy put the tree up today before some of his friends came over. He has a ceramic tree he inherited from his grandmother. It lights up and all but doesn't smell and it's too small to climb. Despite that, it's pretty. Only two of his friends came over so I was more willing to come out and be petted. There wasn't a big hoopla like other times so it wasn't as noisy. I still insisted on being held for a while and Sarge jump up on his lap too. Can you believe the big goof still wanted to go outside. It's cold and dark and he's still at the door trying to escape. He sticks to the sidewalk most of the time and tries to stay near Daddy. At least he comes inside without too much trouble.
Oh, Dad cleaned out the water fountain and added a new filter. The water tastes better and everyone got a nice drink. I like having Daddy home all the time until he finds a new job. He's more willing to hold me when I want to take a nap on him.

Daddy went home last week for Thanksgiving and I got left all alone. Sure the people with the doggie came over to make sure I was OK but it's not the same. I was happy to see him when he came back and hung out around him for a while. Now things are getting back to normal.
He told me that one of his cousins got 3 barn cats. When he asked if they were earning their keep he was told that they were. Those kitties saved a good percentage of the sweet potato crop this year by hunting mice and other pests. That's great, but I hope I won't have to go hunting for my food. It sounds like too much work!
