Arrival Story:
In August 2006 I moved from a small 1-bedroom apartment to a larger townhome. By the end of the month I had settled in and decided it was time to adopt a pair of cats. I visited PetSmart because I heard The Almost Home Foundation had adoption drives on Saturdays. I knew I wanted a cat, not a kitten. Cats don't need to be trained, their personalities have developed, and they are more relaxed. Most importantly I wanted to give a cat a second chance to have a home. I arrived when people were setting up. I had already decided to adopt Sarge. Since he was declawed, his cat-sibling also needed to be declawed. Lena was the only other declawed cat there. Originally she was a stray and was adopted by a couple who were going to have a baby. But when she was one year old she had to be returned because the new child was very allergic to cats. Even if there were other choices, I knew I had to bring her home too.

Hello! My name is Lena. I love to play. I can jump over four feet along a wall to swat at the red light bug. Daddy says I am The Great Tabby Hunter, well I would be if I still had my front claws. I'm smart enough to stay inside unlike my big step-brother Sarge, but I will sometimes follow him into the garage. I love being brushed and I demand Daddy get down on the floor to brush me several times a day. I like being held but not to be petted, but to sleep. When Daddy lies down I will sometimes jump on top of him to make biscuits or take a nap. I'm so happy I have a furever home with him. When his friends come over, I just stay in the back. I'm a one-person kitty. Gotta go now, the evil chipmunk is outside!

Lena RIP

Given the status of the Catster/Dogster site I'm not sure who all will read this. I had to put Lena down today after her kidneys failed last week. I took her to the vet on Thursday when she hadn't eaten for a few days and the diagnosis was confirmed on Friday. Despite being a grumpy old lady she was always sweet to me. I'll always remember the times we had together.

I miss you, Lena.

Got some sad news

I took Lena in for her check up last month and her kidney disease advanced to stage 3. The vet said she has about a year left. I have to start giving her fluids twice a week to keep her hydrated. So far it's going fine and I think she's improving. It's hard to tell sometimes though. She has her good days and her bad. I'm trying to focus on giving her a good quality of life. I want her to make it to Labor Day because that would be 10 years since I adopted her. Of course if she starts going downhill before then, that will have priority. Until then we're taking this one day at a time.

An update

Catster is still broken and people can't reply to diary entries. I've pretty much given up hope. Maybe things will change and when they do, I'll be back.

There was one big, unfortunate, event that happened last year. When my neighbors were taking care of Lena while I was at a family reunion, Lena bit my neighbor when she reached under the bed to give Lena her medicine. The bite got infected and she had to go to the hospital and have minor surgery. Lena had to get tests. My neighbor made a recovery and insurance helped. But now Lena has a mark on her record even though she's a sweet kitty with me. She had to go to the vet and had to be sure she didn't have rabies (of course she didn't).

So I had to get a new cat sitter. This time I went with a professional who knew how to handle cats. So far it's been working out pretty well. Lena still doesn't like strange people but she's warming up. That's provided the sitter remembers that Lena is the alpha and should be brushed first.

On the plus side she's been known to jump up and sleep on my shoulders. *sigh* She's just Daddy's Little Girl.
