Arrival Story: Meeko was born in a local cattery on June 20, 1996. He was sold to a family that had dogs and small children. The children tormented Meeko until he started house soiling. He was returned to the breeder when he was about a year old. She called me because she had heard that I wanted a seal point himmie. She asked if I would like to have him. I said yes, but it would be a couple of weeks before I could pick him up. She said that was fine. When I called to make arrangements to pick him up, she had sold him. "You sold my cat?" A guy had come to look at kittens and liked Meeko better, so she sold him. Fast forward to June of 1998. The breeder called me again. The man who bought Meeko had called and asked if she would take care of him while he was away on a 2 week vacation. He never came back to pick him up. When she called, his phone was disconnected. "He's your kitty and I'm sorry" she told me. "Take as long as you like to pick him up. I promise he's not going anywhere but home with you." I didn't waste any time. Meeko joined our family that day.

Bio: Meeko's trials were not over. In 2003, he got very sick. He was cold and pale. It was Easter Sunday. My Vet came in to the clinic because I had just lost a cat with the same symptoms. His body temperature was low and he was anemic. Other than the anemia, his blood work was pretty normal. We ran an EKG and got some funny results, so we did a chest xray. On the xray, we saw what looked like a really huge heart. We scheduled an ultrasound. By the time the radiologist could get there later in the week, Meeko was feeling much better. What she found was that his gall bladder and part of his liver were inside the pericardial sac. We were not aware of any trauma that could have caused it, so assumed that he was born that way. In 2004, Meeko was diagnosed with chronic renal failure. I began treating him with daily subq fluids. Fast forward again to the Saturday before Easter in 2005. Meeko was going from one litterbox to another and just dribbling. I rushed him in before the clinic closed at 1 pm. I told the Vet that I thought he might obstruct. He didn't think so, but sure enough, that night he blocked. I called the Vet at home and asked if he had any reason to go to the clinic the next morning. He said no. There were no animals there. He was in charge of some Easter activities at church and wouldn't be available until about 4 pm. He would call me when he got home and we would meet at the clinic. By morning, Meeko's bladder was pretty big, so I took him to an emergency hospital. They were not real happy with me because I told them that all I wanted was a cystocentesis. I just told them that I didn't have $1,000 for them to unblock him, so my Vet and I would do that in the afternoon. We did just that. Meeko spent a few days in the hospital with a catheter. When the catheter was removed, he was peeing ok, so I took him home. In less than 24 hours, he was blocked again, so we unblocked him again and scheduled him for surgery. Before the surgery could be done, he came down with a URI. I took him home, catheter and all, and isolated him to recover. He finally got to have his perineal urethrostomy. I continue to treat him for renal failure. At one point, he got so anemic that I was afraid the anemia would kill him before his kidneys did. I told the Vet I wanted to give him Epogen, so I've been doing that ever since. At this point, he's still with me and doing fine.
