Arrival Story:
To make a long story short, I foster kittens for Kindred Kitties. I was fostering a Mama named Little Bit and her babies when I got a call that four orphans had come off a hay truck and needed a foster Mama cat. They brought them over to see if Little Bit would nurse them. Well, she wouldn't so they arranged for me to get another Mama with babies from a lady that was moving and couldn't take her THREE nursing Mama cats with her. So that is how I got Patches and her four little one week old black and white babies, one of which was Bun Bun. Patches accepted the orphans, and everything was fine until we lost one of the orphans at 4 wks. Another two died at 6 wks, one of the orphans and one of Patches', and Patches' other two died at 8 1/2 wks. (RIP babies). We have no idea why all this happened. All that survived was Bun Bun and two of the orphans, Banshee and No Doze. Bun Bun was a normal size kitten until about 6-8 wks. when she started growing slower than her sisters. She also had a couple bouts of uncontrollable diarrhea. She would just be walking across the floor and it would leak out of her. We used every medication on her we had -antibiotics, dewormers, and an antidiarrhea medication. I never figured out how she lived when her seemingly healthy sisters suddenly died at 8 1/2 wks. Her foster sisters got adopted at about 11 wks, and at that point I knew Bun Bun was too small and had too many problems to be adopted. Her Mama got spayed and also finally got adopted from our store last month. I took Bun Bun to the vet at 3 1/2 mos old to see if we could find out what was wrong with her, and at this point she only weighed 2 lbs. She was too small for them to draw enough blood for bloodwork or to tap her belly for fluids (FIP test). I was told to come back in a couple weeks. Well, I went back when she was 6 months old and weighed about 4 lbs., and the vet did an ultrasound of her stomach. It showed she had thickened loops of intestines, enlarged lymph nodes, and she had undigested fat gloubles in her stool. He said she either had FIP, which is fatal, or a congenital intestinal defect, which is permanent. He said she was not adoptable and maybe should be put down by our rescue group. Well, I love the Bun Bun and just let those words go over my head. She has a home here as long as she lives. At that time, she was mainly leaking poop when she slept, which was a little hard on the furniture. She also had bad gas all the time. That's why her nickname is my little Stink Bomb. Around that time, I got a free bag of Science Diet, and Bun Bun seemed to do better eating that. I also researched intestinal issues on the web, and I think she may have Inflammatory Bowel Disease or something similar. I found a supplement called "The Missing Link" that has fiber and Omega fatty acids, and this has helped her too. No more leaking on the furniture. In fact, the last time she had diarrhea was after she ate some rich can food that she shouldn't have (thanks Auntie Trish).
Bio:
Bun Bun still weighs just under 4 lbs. and is now 8 mos. old. I think she has stopped growing. She has short legs but is a little long in the body. She looks like a weinie kitty. She is nice and filled out in the body like an adult cat. She also has a rounded head and HUGE eyes that just melt you when she looks at you. She has not been spayed because she never went into heat, and I don't think she ever will. She hasn't really bonded with any other cat in the house, but she likes to play with the foster kittens sometimes. They are more her size. She absolutely adores me (the feeling is mutual), but usually runs from my husband or stepkids. She appears happy and healthy all the time now, but I am just holding my breath hoping she doesn't have FIP or anything else that may shorten her life. Bun Bun is a very special kitty and I would be devastated if anything happened to her. UPDATE: See my diary!!!
