Likes:
To be brushed under his chin and to sit on guests' laps, asked or not--that's a whole lotta cat to end up in an unprepared person's lap!

Pet-Peeves:
Not being able to go outside, not being able to run in the apartment building's stairwells, having to wait for food, an untidy litterbox, the doorbell, the vaccuum, loud voices, energetic children.

Favorite Toy:
His brush (it's great to chew on--even the wire bristles) and emery boards (every time I use one he makes me rub it on his face).

Favorite Nap Spot:
On the couch, smack up next to me.

Favorite Food:
He goes *crazy* over green olives.

Skills:
Burrowing under the blankets, biting when he's overstimulated. And writing (see diary).

Arrival Story:
My sweet boy kitty Otto had been deceased about a year when I received an email from my friend Dan who said he'd rescued a gray male kitten who'd been hit by a car. He'd taken the kitten to the vet, and there was only a little sinus damage to him, and he'd be fine and did anybody want to take him in? I thought, "Uh-oh, there's my cat," but I resisted, trying instead to help find him a good home. Eventually, another friend of Dan's took the gray kitten, and I thought oh well, that's that. After a week or two, she gave him back to Dan because she was allergic. Finally, I went over to Dan's place to "look at the kitten" (carrying a cat carrier, mind you). I took one look at his little gray face with his eyes a little crossed and I knew that, yep, that's him. After a few days of getting to know him, I named him Gomez, after Gomez Addams. He was the sweetest little pudding pie for the first 5 days or so, and then he turned into a fiesty maniacal beast! Anything that moved--including me--was prey. My grand dame cat, Belphoebe, was very UNhappy with him. My vet took one look at him and said she saw T-R-O-U-B-L-E written across his forehead. But he still had moments of sweetness and many, many moments of making me laugh at his crazy antics. And Belphoebe grew to appreciate his companionship, although she never liked being stalked and pounced on after leaving the litterbox. Now that Gomez is a little older, he has mellowed into a sort of lap cat, but he still stirs things up occasionally with his new little sister Fiona.

Bio:
My one theory about why Gomez turned maniacal is, when he was with the woman who kept him for two weeks, she had named him Mr. Buttons. I think he must've developed post-traumatic stress disorder over the indignity of that name. Now Gomez loves to curl up on people's laps when they come over, even brand new visitors. If he doesn't want to be in someone's lap, I find myself reassessing that person because I believe that Gomez Knows.

As I See It

Things Are Getting Hairy--and Pink

March 13th 2008 9:24 am   [link to this entry]

Oh, my fellow cats'n'jammers,

I was having a good stretch after a delightful nap, when I happened to glance up at the Food Lady sitting at the computer, and she was looking at this:

I am afraid. Very afraid.

And if she does actually purchase one of these abominable things, at least get me the Electric Blue and *not* the Pink Passion!

Until next time,
Gomez

It's My Birthday!

February 21st 2008 8:49 am   [link to this entry]

Hello, cats'n'jammers,

It's that time of year again, the celebratory day of my birth. The Food Lady started the celebrations early by giving me sprinklings of cat nip the past two nights. Aaaaaah, cat nip! Elixir, manna and quail of the Gods! All my dreams rolled up into one herb. I sing the cat nip electric! Cat Nip! O Cat Nip! O.....I think I must still be reeling from last night's effects.

I just hope this evening's festivities bring more..........Cat Nip!

Until next time,
Gomez

The Chill of February

February 13th 2008 4:56 pm   [link to this entry]

Hello, cats'n'jammers,

We've had record snow-fall for the month of February in my part of the world. And it wouldn't be Chicago without the infamous "windchill factor" adding to the already freezing temps. I'm having to spend much of my time these days in my den under the comforter. However, it does afford me plenty of opportunity to dream--and to scheme!

I've also been putting the Food Lady to good use as my very own space heater. She's actually quite a good source of heat energy (when she's home anyway). Wherever she sits, I'm there to soak up the warmth. She does have a tendency to get up a lot, disturbing the position I'd so carefully picked out. I'm working on curbing this tendency in her, my main teaching tool being the ol' Sad-Soulful-Eyes look. The results have been promising so far.

The Puffy One has her own unique way of keeping warm: she runs pell mell across the living room floor and then skids into a big cardboard box that's lying on its side. Both she and the box then crash into the wall. Then she runs out and does it again, crashing the box into a different wall. Apparently, this activity helps keep her body temperature up. I tried suggesting to her a more dignified way of achieving warmth, but she was off running and skidding before I'd even finished my sentence. I suppose she must learn on her own, without the benefit of my older brotherly wisdom.

Warmth to you all,
Gomez
