There was a story in the local paper about an exotic animal dealer who had left hundreds of animals to starve to death in a deserted barn. Many of the animals were dead in their cages, and some too ill to recover, by the time the officials from the SPCA were alerted to the problem. The ones that were saveable were taken to the shelter, given medical treatment, and put up for adoption. The instant we read the article, we knew we wanted one of the cats. When we got there, my husband saw a little gray fur ball huddled in the back of a cage. When she looked up at him with those baby blue eyes, he was hooked for life. Poor Katrine had an eating disorder from having nearly starved. We --- and the vet --- were certain that she had had several litters of kittens, one after another so this unscrupulous man could make money selling them. Her little nails were worn down to nothing but bleeding stubs from her scratching and trying to get out of the cage to get a drink and some food. We were never sure of her exact age, but think she was around three years old when we got her. Despite all the trauma she experienced, she remained the sweetest and most loving kitty. She never met a stranger, and when the vet came to visit, she jumped right up on the table and welcomed her, while the rest of our kitties ran under the beds.
Katrine lived a long, long time --- we estimate she was about 20 years old when she lapsed into a coma. Our regular housecall vet was on vacation, so we took her to another one. He said that she would probably never come out of the coma, so we had to put her to rest forever. She is now happy and greeting all the newcomers at the Rainbow Bridge.
Forever in our Hearts
