Falldown originally lived with us after him, his siblings and his mother were semi-feral strays rescued from our first feral colony trappings. His mother was very pregnant and we didn't want her kits born outside. Falldown's mom tested positive for leukemia as did her kits. It is hard enough to place healthy cats, let alone ones with an illness. Falldown's family lived with us for the time they had and then each one was gently helped to cross. Falldown and two siblings lived for almost 12 years until we helped them across the bridge. Falldown had been gone for two years when I get an email from a friend of mine about a Katrina rescued cat who desperately needed a home. She only forwards special needs cats in need of a forever home to me as that is what my partner and I do - provide a forever home to moderately and severely disabled cats and kittens. Something compelled her to send this email to me and when I opened the photos I was stunned and immediately forwarded them to my partner with a note asking "who is this cat?". She didn't even stop to email, picked up the phone and said - get in touch with this lady - that is Falldown and we need to bring him home - he is one of ours. I contacted my friend who put me in touch with a wonderful person in a very hard hit part of Mississippi who has been going every weekend since the first week to TNR, feed, medicate and trap to rehome the cats and kittens left behind by those who were forced to leave their furchildren and evacuate.
Falldown is not only identical in every marking, but his voice, his eyes, his mannerisms ARE Falldown. We arranged to meet his Katrina mom who truly is a beautiful person and bring our boy home. There has not been one hiss or slap - he is home, his friends who were here when he crossed knew it was him and by nightfall were snuggled again together. One of our cats, Stretch, who was HBC, lost an eye, is deaf in one ear, has Horner's Syndrome and whose left side of his face droops did not have a 'buddy' - Falldown immediately chose Stretch to be his pal and integrated him with Nubbins who also has an interesting rescue story. The three of them come to bed every night and line themselves in a snuggled row under my partner's right arm.
I imagine some will think this story hogwash, but there are also going to be many of you who will truly believe that Falldown has returned to us.
Sadly, on 15 May 2007, Falldown Kitty after having survived the horrors of Katrina, being rescued by a wonderfully loving and compassionate woman who became his momMom's dear friend after helping him return to good health and get back to his MomMom, was called home again. Falldown and his moms fought long and hard, but while we will never know what terrible toxins he was exposed to and consumed, we know that his liver was no match for them. Our moms and their new special friend grieve for Falldown whose time here was too short, but also worry that in the months to come there will be many other cats and dogs who survived Katrina but they too will cross because of the terrible waste land that they had to survive in. Falldown was a very special boy and was so loved. From the minute he walked into the house everyone loved him - no hissing, no spitting or slapping. Those that were with us when he left the first time, knew immediately who he was and took up where they left off. Falldown was great at making everyone feel welcome and loved. He immediately saw that our Stretch who had been hit by a car and suffers from Horner's Syndrome and looks 'different' needed a friend so Falldown became his buddy. He told his long time friend, Nubbins, that he too needed to become Stretch's friend and I'd often come in the bedroom to find the three of them curled together in a sunbeam. Falldown slipped gently to the other side on Tuesday, 15 May 2007 at 7:00 p.m. His friends, Stretch and Nubbins, did not leave his side all that day and others too came to hold vigil throughout the day. Our Mandy, she herself a survivor of hepatic lipadosis brought upon by being abandoned and almost pts along with her sister sibling Tracy when her caregiver, studying to be a vet, was going to get married and her fiance who had a large lab, told finance that he was 'allergic to cats', was with Falldown as she is with all our babies, when he left us. MomLee, too, was with Falldown and saw the angels on the other side waiting to walk with Falldown into the light. Falldown was truly a very special cat and we know that one day, he will return to us again. Run with the wind, my angel Falldown 'get runned over by car multiple times' Kitty..... /love momMom
