Arrival Story: She came into the shelter I work at and DESPARATELY needed TLC. She was only about 4 weeks old, but she was skin and bones! She weighed about 100 grams underweight (only 250g instead of the 370 she should have been!) She had no appetite and no real will to do anything. No one thought she had a chance, but they decided to ask if anyone would try, and I decided I needed too. Several days of force feeding and she started eating dry chow on her own - but the breakthrough was trying baby food. She is currently doing AMAZINGLY better, and is my foster until she gets big enough and old enough to find her forever home!

Bio: Sicily's former owners surrendered her because she was so debilitated - and they figured she was going to die. Her parents were inside/outside FIV+ cats, and she was born and lived in a garage until they decided they didn't want to deal with her anymore and brought her to us. As said above, we believed her chance of survival was VERY low as well. She tested negative for F IV, but still had so many problems. I was needing to force feed her for several days while she just sat looking at us with hopeless eyes. We were close to giving up and I finally asked HER what she wanted to do - just be done with all of this and get to rest, or try for one more night to get better. I put a hand down when I said each option, and she very seriously sniffed at both, then got up, stepped into the palm of the "one more night" sat down, and looked up into my eyes. I couldn't say no to that - and finally tried dry food - and she ATE IT ON HER OWN! Over that weekend I also introduced baby food which she loved, and that monday (only 3 days later) she was well on her way to recovery! Now she is a chubby, playful, happy kitten, who loves to purr, wrestle, chase toys, play fight with her foster siblings, and make every smile! In a few weeks, when she is at least 2 lbs (and 8 weeks old), she'll be going up for adoption (if a staff member doesn't grab her first!). With her cuteness and personality we don't think she'll be waiting long for her forever home. She had a really hard start (FIV parents, living in a garage, small injuries over her legs, and her anorexia may have taken some of those kitty lives, but she's got alot of spunk to spend for many years now!

Lives Remaining: 4 of 9

OCTOBER '06 UPDATE: About a week ago Sicily started limping on her left front leg for no apparent reason. The shelter vet, a volunteer vet, and most of the medical staff and myself checked it over and could find no injury, so particular sore spots, no swelling, etc. We wrapped it for a couple days, but were at a loss. On Monday, we discovered a tongue ulcer - Sicily had contracted calicivirus. Apparently this can cause limping sometimes. She went off her food for a while and lost over 200 grams (at only 670g or so
OCTOBER '06 UPDATE CONTINUED: (at only 670g or so when it started, that was ALOT!!). She seems to be recovering now, and is eating on her own again - but for a while she had to get fluids, force feeding, appetite stimulents etc. She's back up to 620g today (at about 9 weeks old, she's still VERY small for her age), and seems to be improving. Things got a little worrisome, but she seems to be back on the road to recover. Hopefully we can get her up to 2 lbs (the legal minimum for adoption) and find her a forever home!
NOVEMBER '06 UPDATE: Sicily is just about 2lbs now, and in great health! Hooray! She's running around constantly playing, and has become a fearless, loving ball of energy! She will likely be going in the week of the 13th to be spayed, and hopefully quickly find her forever home! We'll miss her tons here, but she'll do so great!
NOVEMBER 16 2006:: SICILY IS ADOPTED! She went to her new home (across town) today! We'll miss her! (Hopefully we'll get updates...)
JUNE 2008 UPDATE: I have just discovered that someone returned her back to the shelter!!!! I will be going in tomorrow to investigate:
1. _WHY_ in the world would they have returned her now?!
2. WHY no one contacted me to let me know as I had requested.
I am EXTREMELY upset - and will definitely be making sure to find out what is going on. With all the work I put into this baby I'm devestated that she has found herself back in a cage..
ADOPTION INFO: Sicily (aka Cali) is available for adoption at the Champaign County Humane Society. http://www.cuhumane.org. ID # A056385. I would love for her to find a loving FOREVER home. It breaks my heart that the people who adopted her didn't provide that. If you are interested in her, please go meet her. And if you adopt her I'd LOVE to know about it!
Why she is back:: Ok, and now for the reason Sicily/Cali was returned after almost 2 years......(drumroll).....
The adopter was moving (voluntarily) into a new apartment in town because they liked the new place more. But no pets allowed. So they brought this girl and the other they adopted with her back. Apparently they showed no remorse about it either, didn't seem to care what happened to them, they were no longer 'convenient' to keep...
I am so heartbroken. I will NEVER understand the way some people see animals as disposable - it was so painful to bring her back from fostering to put up for adoption, I can't imagine choosing to give up any of my animals - EVER, if there were any other option. I really hope my poor baby finds a REAL forever home that will give her the love she deserves and will so return for the rest of her life.
She was VERY sweet when I visited her, rolling over and head butting me, purring, wanting to play, etc. She will make a FABULOUS companion for someone!
ADOPTED: I just recently was informed by the shelter Sicily was at that she has found a new home! The family adopting her is very nice and has another adult kitty they wanted to get a companion for, and apparently the 2 of them get along! Its very exciting that she'll be going home again. Thank you to everyone who sent purrs her way!
