Arrival Story:
Found him in the parking lot of Delyte W. Morris Library, hence his name. His life was uneventful until summer 2005, when he became extremely ill with a huge growth in his intestines. I persuaded the vet to remove the growth and stitch everything back together, but she did not think he would survive. The growth was not cancerous, and he began to recover, although there was a long period of force feeding which we both hate to remember. He had just started to be really well when he escaped into the woods behind my trailer, and was gone for six days. The vet insisted that he would die after three days because his stitched-up gut needed constant food. On the sixth day he came up to the porch and was coaxed in, and he was SO happy to be inside that it changed his whole personality. He is much more loving now, even though he hates sharing me with Stella, the kitten I rescued in June 2006. He hates the other two kittens, adopted in Nov. 2007, even more, and avoids them if at all possible. Old age and hyperthyroid disease have made him a skinny old guy, but he still has his bouts of running around like crazy--and he still wants to go outside. He has a new, secure doggie vest that he tolerates, so he may be able to go outside safely with constant supervision when the weather gets better.

Delyte has had checkups and the vet has always said there was no sign of regrowth of his tumor. He eats voraciously but is having a hard time keeping weight on. Still the top cat just by virtue of intimidating the young cats with a withering look, and still determined to be the top cuddler with me. In 2009 he developed hyper thyroid disease, which had to be managed by rubbing the meds on his ear, since his delicate stomach rejected all oral medication. But it did not seem to work well and he lost more and more weight. He had bad teeth and even broke off one of his signature fangs, but at 16 he was considered too old and frail to undergo either thyroid treatment or oral surgery. By his 18th birthday, his age and all the conditions combined to make his life uncomfortable. He was feisty to the end, pacing around the doctor's office while we were waiting to send him to the Bridge. He even fought all the way, managing a last pathetic meow even after his heart stopped.
