I was out patrolling my yard, and when I got back I discovered that I had been tagged by my friend, Phoebe, to participate in Kazumi Joy's meme.

The rules:
Each player starts with seven random facts about themselves. Cats who are tagged need to write on their own diary about the seven things and the rules. You need to choose seven cats to tag and list their names. Don’t forget to leave them a comment that they have been tagged and to read your diary.

My seven random facts:
1. I will sit and watch a chipmunk hole for hours.
2. I am the smallest cat in my house.
3. However, I am the top cat in my house.
4. I love my brother, Spencer.
5. I will go outside in any weather, perhaps I was a postal carrier in another life.
6. I am a catnip addict. *eyes go wild* I can't help it, I just can't get enough.
7. I go crazy when mom gets out the laser pointer. I'll chase that little red light anywhere.

The cats that I am tagging are:
Hopper
Tigga
Fiesta Cat
Peaches
Kiowa
Ashlye
Arnold P

Exciting or scary?

I had quite an adventure the other day. I can only just now write about it. As usual, I was pestering to go outside early in the morning to make my daily patrol around the yard. Mom hestitated because she had to go away that day, but relented because I am a very good pesterer. But when she left, she forgot I was outside! She didn't get home until after dark, and when I didn't show up in the kitchen for dinner she realized what she had done and ran outside to find me. After she nearly had a heart attack, I came up on the deck and ran in the house. She lavished apologies and love on me the rest of the night.

So now kitties, I will share how I spent my exciting day. First, I made my patrols of the yard. I saw no intruders. I guarded the bird feeder for a while. Those birds eat too much seed and I have to force them to conserve. I went to my favorite chipmunk hole and watched for him to come out and play. Then I went up on the deck to go in, but mom never came. So back down for another patrol. Back on the deck. Around supper time I was getting pretty hungry and sat outside the door, but still no one came.

When it got dark, I heard the big owl that lives in our valley, so I stayed close to the house under the bushes. I worked my way to the front door, in case anyone was there. I cried a little (but don't tell anyone). Finally, a car pulled into the driveway, and shortly after I heard mom. But I was mad and a little scared so I made her wait just a little while before I finally went inside! Relief! Food! Hugs! I stayed inside the next day and slept a lot. I burned lots of energy on my adventure and needed to recharge. So that was my big adventure- exciting or scary? You decide.

A beau-ti-ful day!

It is a beautiful day today! The sun is shining and its nice and warm. No need to save energy, I'll just be baking myself in the sun. My patrol is easy today, no intruders and lots to keep me entertained. The deer have been coming round early, eating all of our plants. And I've noticed some of the winter birds - juncos - have arrived. I think I'll enjoy today!

A drowned what?

It is pouring down rain outside today. But, as my friends know, I regularly patrol my yard to make sure all is well. It's my job and I take it seriously. So today, I waited by the door as usual, meowing every 5 minutes to get mom's attention. When she finally got there, she said, "Max, if you go out in this rain, you'll come back looking like a drowned rat." A drowned rat? Having never witnessed this situation, but realizing that rats are not the most attractive creatures, I assumed this statement was supposed to deter me from heading out. But I went, because its my job.

You know wet fur can sure make you cold, which uses lots of energy. And you know I am very into energy conservation. So the trick is to get dry as quickly as possible. At my house I have trained my mom to dry me off as soon as I walk inside. I stand in the middle of the kitchen floor and look as pathetic as possible. Mom usually grabs a towel and rubs me down. I always make sure to roll on my back so she can get my tummy and feet. Nothing worse than cold, wet feet. (Begging for a quick energy boosting snack is not a bad idea at this time also)

Well, friends, that's it for today. Oh, yeah, I now know what a drowned rat looks like.

About Chipmunks

Before I get into today's energy saving tip, you might notice that in most, possibly all, of my photos I am reclining. Enough said.

Now I do go outside in my yard on occasion, where we seem to have an abundance of chipmunks. But you know it is not good energy conservation to chase them around - burns lots of fuel, my friends. So my method is to find a nice chipmunk hole, lie down beside it and wait. Eventually the chipmunk will see you as part of the landscape, like a tree or a stone (I'm often perceived as a stone because of my gray fur), and it will venture out. It is then that you can extend a paw in friendly greeting, perhaps play a little - just a little, let the chipmunk do most of the jumping around - they store food, so they can afford the energy.

Avoiding overnight energy deficit

If you live in a house where food is not available at all times, like mine, *grumble* you must take energy saving measures during the long, long, long night before breakfast.

1. For several hours before bed, spend as much time as possible lying motionless on the floor.
2. Do whatever you have to do to get a treat just before bed. Learn to like what your people snack on, popcorn for example.
3. Take your place on the bed early, select the warmest possible spot and refuse to move from it.
4. This is critical - stay in bed until the food is in your bowl in the morning. Let other cats do the work of waking people and getting them to feed you.

Let them think I'm lazy or laid back, whatever - I'm just saving my fuel.

On drinking water

Since this is my first entry, I must share my philosophy on life. Don't burn energy unnecessarily, conserve it for when you need it most. That's it - simple. So I will share my first energy saving tip. When drinking water, lie down on your side next to the bowl. That's right, flop right over. This places your head in the perfect position for drinking, while conserving the energy normally needed for standing or sitting. It's really quite comfortable. Ok, everyone practice. More tips coming soon.
