I (Helen) began working a couple of weekends a month for a vet nearby so when Dinah looked like she might have pink eye or a cold, I took her in to my employer. The new vet gave her some eye drops for allergies (which she has always had a touch of).
Most interestingly, though, he looked at her records from the other vet and was not convinced that the elevated liver values from her last blood work were anything to worry about at this time (same thing my vet tech friend also told me recently). He said there are other values that they look at that would indicate something sinister. Those values did not concern him.
He said that I could take her off the Denosyl because while it won't hurt her he didn't think it was doing much to help her right now. We'll check her blood work again in October. We will keep her on the Renal Essential chews that she takes because those contain some good stuff for her.
We are also trying her on a different kidney diet food. She has lost another pound because over the last couple of weeks she has begun snubbing it unless she is really hungry. She had begun to ignoring even the wet food until I started mixing it with the wet kitten food. Often times she and Calpurnia would switch bowls because Dinah prefers the Dads brand and Cala likes the K/D. Purina makes a prescription diet that is very palatable and she seems to like it a lot. I didn't even need to mix it with any wet food.
Overall the vet seemed to give a less dire picture of her situation. His description of her kidney problem was 'early stage' that had not gotten much worse over the last couple of years. The other vet kind of made it sound like she was on her way out. New vet says that the kidney diet alone doubles her expected life span of a 'kidney cat' who doesn't get a special diet.
Yay, Dinah!!
Thanks all for continued prayers!

I'm eating my food and putting a little bit of weight on. Mom says that I am getting very spoiled. But that's a good thing, right? Mom and dad finally figured out a formula that works. I get a meatball of kitten food in the morning, a bigger blob of kitten food in the late morning and a blob of K/D in the late afternoon. And I can graze all day with Calpurnia on the K/D kibble. I basically get to eat allll the time. And I get lots of scratchies. I have gotten sick to my stomach a couple of times recently but that doesn't stop me from chowing down. I'm stll the cutest, most loveable cat in the world! Along with Cala, of course!
Thanks everyone for thinking of me!

Helen here...
Jim and I took a short trip to visit his family over the weekend. My mom (Grandma to the fuzzies) came and stayed with the crew. I prepared all of Dinah's medication meatballs and glops of wet K/D so mom wouldn't have to worry about it and lined it all up in the refrigerator with sticky notes. Amazing how things change...For 14 years when I left for a trip I'd fill up a big bowl with cat food and leave plenty of water and they were good to go! But I don't mind. Anything for my fuzzy ones.
When I called Sunday morning mom said that Dinah wouldn't eat and she had hurled. These days its hard to know if that's her normal hurling (both cats have always been hairball gaggers) or if it's something more sinister. So I fretted a bit on the way home thinking that she might be in bad shape. But when I got home mom said she had eaten a little bit and was acting normal. When I put out her afternoon glop of K/D she scarfed it down and then sat with mom and me for a scratchie fest. Apparently the whole weekend was a scratchie fest. Mom spent most of the evening on Saturday with Sketch on one side and Dinah on the other rubbing their bellies.
SPOILED ANYONE?? :)
