Arrival Story:
I am a classroom teacher. Ellie was born underneath my mobile classroom to a completely feral mother. Her mother was trapped and removed from the area, and we believed that there were no kittens. Until - UH-OH - mom was spayed and the vet noticed she was lactating while she was on the table already under anesthesia! After a frantic call to me (2 days had already passed), a quick search found this little survivor crawling a few feet away from where her mother had been trapped, screaming her head off looking for food. She was about 2 weeks old - her eyes and ears were just barely open, she had no teeth, and could only paddle her legs like a seal to move herself - but she was very much alive. Somehow she managed to live without her mom for 2 1/2 days - must have been divine intervention, because it was April and the nights were still quite cool. After a quick run to the pet store for a nurser and formula, Ellie drank from a bottle, and I was hooked on her. A trip to the vet found her to be in excellent health - 12 ounces, 2 weeks old, free from all parasites and infectious diseases. I had no desire to keep her, but once I put a bottle in her mouth, she was mine and there was no way I could let her go. She's been with me since, and I can't imagine ever parting with her.

Bio:
Ellie is named "Elgin" for the town in which she was born. Since she was hand raised on a bottle, she imprinted on people, and does not recognize herself as a "cat" -- she prefers wrestling with dogs over cats, as my 225 pound Mastiff Lincoln helped to raise her from the time she came to live with me. Ellie probably survived her ordeal without her mom because she was the only kitten born to her mother, and so, she was much larger and stronger than most kittens her age would have been. Ellie is more human or canine than feline because she did not have the benefit of feline interaction during her first several weeks of life -she prefers to company of humans to her own kind. She does, however, enjoy spending time with my other cats. They all know she is "mama's baby" and so, they spoil her to no end - despite her small size and young age, she is certainly the QUEEN of the household. The other cats let her do whatever she wants. She was definitely a keeper; I can't imagine life without her.
