Arrival Story:
My Mummy, Caroline, had another cat that she got when she was 5 years old. Unfortunately for Whiskers, she died at the age of 13. Caroline was completely and utterly devestated. After all, Whiskers had been her baby. So my Mummy's Mummy, aka. Grandmummy, took Caroline and her sister to the Wisconsin Humane Society to find a new cat. They came to my cage and of course fell instantly in love because I am *ahem* the cat's meow. ;) While Caroline was falling in love with me and I with her, Libby discovered my cage-mate, the skittish little calico/tabby mix who would later become known as Harriet. We were both around 9 months old. Unfortunately, much to my horror, instead of going home with Caroline right away, I was put back into my cage! It turned out that my family was unable in the end to take me home that day. But...the following day, Caroline, Libby and their Daddy came back to the humane society...well...as it turned out, that day just so happened to be a 2 for 1 day! LOL Boy was Granddaddy suckered and Grandmummy was SHOCKED when we all came home - Caroline, Libby, Daddy, Harriet and me - Fritzie! And we went from an outrageously noisey ward in the old building from the WHS (they have since moved to a new complex that is quite the stylin building!!) to the crazy household that was getting ready to move a couple of miles away a few months after Harriet and I arrived. There was this giant needle-nose on sticks - Faisa - an Ibizan Hound, Benjamin - Whiskers only survivor of her only litter, a mouse, and a frog. Plus two teenaged girls! LOL What a madhouse! But boy was I thilled to be in that house - and especially thrilled to be in the then new house that was a bit bigger - more room to explore! And boy oh boy - did I fall completely in love with my new Mummy! And I still am!

Bio:
I am now 14 years young, but my age is beginning to show. After all, I'm now in retirement! I've always had a bit of a problem with my perefial vision, but now it's a bit worse, and so is my hearing. And we couldn't understand why my heart wouldn't slow down and why I was always starving and eating, but still losing weight! A discussion, and blood test, with the vet however has made it clear that I have a very severe case of hyperthyroidism! My Mummy tried shoving pills down my throat twice a day for a while until I kept biting her and she started to bleed. Plus I would make such a ungodly ruckus everyone thought that I was being tortured - including Caroline. So she stopped the pills and found out about a cream to put on my ears instead. But since it wasn't allowed to be rubbed in or anything, it started attracting all sorts of stuff to my ears, plus my ear lobes started getting all irritated. I hated that! So now my Mummy is sticking a syringe (thankfully with no needle) in my mouth twice a day with 5 ML of this horrible tasting liquid - I don't care if they say its supposed to taste like fish! I can't stand it! Plus, it makes me throw up even more now. So - now I am also getting 1/8th of a 20mg Pepcid A/C pill as well to try and settle my stomach. When she does manage to get it in me, if it stays in my mouth for a few seconds I start to froth at the mouth and make Caroline miserable. But I'm miserable too - I hate having things forced into me. Does anyone know of a thyroid shot that I could get once a week or once a month instead??

It's tough getting older

Yech! I was diagnosed almost 2 years ago with hyperthyroidism, and it took a long time to bring it under control. I think that's why I was recently told I have the beginning stages of kidney failure too. And my long hair is getting harder to take care of - my mother is having to brush me more and more frequently which of course I make her feel like she is torturing me. But then again, with all my matts that build sooo quickly, she is!

Yes. I know. I am getting to be on the more senior level of cats, but really, this stinks. I'm about 14, soon to be 15(!) years old in April 2007 and I have to admit it's not easy getting older.

But I decided to write this entry as I'm noticing there are lots of cats out there who also have hyperthyroidism and thought it would be good to share my experience of finding the right medicine if it will help anyone.

It took a long time to figure out the best way to treat it though, that's for sure!! First my mummy kept trying to shove these awfull pills down my throat. When I was throwing those up first my vet suggested the non chewable form of pepcid a/c - 1/8th of a pill with my medicine. Good grief that was gross!

Then my vet suggested a topical cream for the inside of my ears. OMG! That was hideous! Not to mention irritating and got my ears all gunky, red and painful after a while.

But after my mummy did some more research and asking different vets and fellow catsters, she found out that there were 2 more options. 1 was also medicinal, and the other sounds scary as it's surgical with radiation! Thankfully mummy didn't have to go so far as putting me under the knife!

I'm now on a liquid medicine twice daily - Methimaz - but honestly, it's so good that I wish I could get it 5 times a day!

I think it's because the local pet pharmacy is so great and they make it with great flavors. I mean, there's chicken, beef, butter, strawberry, grape, etc. But for me, it's banana! I LOVE my banana medicine because mummy combines it with about a tablespoon of 2% milk and I get my very own banana milkshake!!

(You have to understand, I've been known to knock mummy's banana milkshakes out of her hand to get at them I love them so much!!!)

I know it's not a great thing to have hyperthyroidism, and it's not a nice disease, but at least this helps to control it better and make our lives better for longer. :)

They ship all over the country too with a prescription, and no, I'm affiliated, I'm just very pleased with how they've been able to help Fritzie and my mother's dog Oliver - they do all his medicines too.
