Ditch Tiger Hunting :(

This blog post is not fur kids or sensitive aminals and adults. Skip it if you don't wants to be sad.

Srsly. Also I iz being uncharacteristically political today.

It's hunting season in South Dakota. Hoomans can get a license to hunt deer and pheasant and cats here. This iz why I learned to walk on a leash.

They iz supposed to hunt only feral cats to control their population. The problem iz that it is legal to hunt from a car or truck, as long as it is somewhat away from a residence. In the city, feral cats usually live near dumpsterz, and dumpsterz iz too close to residences to hunt there, but in the country feral cats rarely follow the roads because they iz scared of hoomans and cars. So what they end up hunting iz "ditch tigers".

Farms and ranches have to have cats working fur them to control the inevitable rodent population attracted to their produce or feed. Queen cats teach their kittens frum the first day which sounds and smells are dangerous, then they teach them hao to hunt. There iz no better mouse trap on the planet than a cat. Farmers try to keep kittens around that are fast, smart, short-haired and dark or orange furred, who aren't allergic to tick treatments and who have no other genetic traits that will make them targets fur predators. They need to be friendly enough to be handled fur vaccinations and sumtimez to get Afrin fur respiratory infections. Tom cat spray helps warn predators away from litters of kittens. It's a delicate balance and a hard life fur a cat but far from hao hard a life feral cats have.

Most farmers consider it cruel to take a shelter cat and drop it off outside with no experience. It's like dropping off a 4-year-old hooman child in the middle of a city where they don't speak the language. Without a coat or money. So they breed their own cat staff.

Without cats on a farm, sometimes feral cats will domesticate themselves, but more often skunks move in. That only has to happen once before you make sure you get some cats from another farm. Srsly.

On to mai point. Many of the people hunting cats come in from out of state and shoot ditch tigers because they think it's funny. The problem iz that ditch tigerz are usually farm cats. (I would like to point out that most hunters from South Dakota seem to think hunting cats is either not very sporting or completely abhorrent. This iz an agricultural area and no one likes to lose a good cat even if they don't view us as pets.)

They are not allowed to shoot cats with collars, but collars attract the attention of hawks, owls, foxes and coyotes. Farmers have to decide whether their cats have moar to fear from the wilderness or man.

So anyway, there has been no sign of foxes or hawks here lately, but there has been lots of gunshots and we is not far from the city (relatively) and only 3 miles from a paved road and Mayday and Droopy, both fond of hunting in the ditches where the ground squirrels live, are missing since we heard the shots. And it's November. It is possible they are gone fur good. Lazarus's father wuz shot in the face last year but he survived. Somehao.

Writing letterz to the South Dakota government may be the first thing you think of, but it's not the best idea. They don't have a viable alternative fur cat hunting licenses right nao. What they will want befoar they consider removing the cat hunting option is an alternative that works.

The best thing in mai opinion is to help The Alliance for Contraception in Cats and Dogs develop their contraceptive shot.

http://www.acc-d.org/

This will allow inexpensive Catch-Neuter-Release near the dumpsterz in the towns and cities where population control is most needed while allowing farmerz to keep their feline workers safe while they are doing their jobs. I purrsonally believe non-surgical sterilization is the future of pet population control and hope to see it purrfected in mai lifetime. It would save so many kitties and puppies from starvation and euthanasia in shelterz and in feral colonies.

I also believe legislators in South Dakota and other places with population control problemz will listen when this alternative is presented. It is a clean, elegant and inarguable solution for all concerned.

I iz giving away prizes!

My primates both had to spend a lot of time with doctors in the last year and my primate just got her voice back and a sponsor for Critter News so we are back on the air!

I just uploaded a new one to Catster.

Critter News May 22,2008

I also post them at livevideo, revver and big, snazzy high-resolution copies at archive.org. At any of those places I use the username orangecatblues and the keyword/tag critternews. Anyone who wants to can download, copy, share, archive or post unedited Critter News videos for non-commercial reasons. I don't count websites that rely on ad revenue as commercial. As long as you aren't using them to sell cat food or burning DVDs for sale it's prolly OK.

This one is a little late. It gives a Menu Foods settlement update and there's a game to play where you have to guess which news story is true. I'm a little rusty and using a borrowed camera but I hope to be back in the swing soon.

Finally! *(Almost)

The phone company finally finished attaching the line to the house.

Over two months after they started.

I can visit Catster now, but they gave us the wrong SMTP information so I can't send email.

Are all human services this bad? If we cats ran things, things would get done right the first time. If you don't do it right the first time your customers will just keep waking you from your naps. That's not right. Maybe if the primates took more naps we wouldn't have these problems.

I replaced the Ode to Tuscan Milk video. Turns out it did get corrupted when I tried uploading it earlier. I suppose it's too late to upload the updated Father's Day video seeing as Labor Day is coming up soon.

The contest has been cancelled. My primates are going to have more medical bills coming so they have to shut down their micropublishing company to pay fur them.

This means I'm semi-retiring. I think lack of internet and the reality of sudden medical conditions has convinced my family they need to spend more time together away from the internet.

I may do occasional videos, but not as much as before and with a smaller budget. I don't know if Luna has any plans for more Fargate Trekwars adventures, but we'll see. Two characters in a story called Zak Starquake are going to be named after us because of that video, so that's sort of cool.

Grock the Toad

July 9th 2007 7:19 am

So, there's this toad that lives by the ditch in front of our house. His name is Grock. He comes up to our porch sometimes when the bugs hang out by the light.

I'm pretty happy most of the time. There's always a silver lining somewhere. I mean, no matter how bad my day is going I can always sneak off and steal cotton swabs from the bathroom to play with, you know? The way I figure it, if your life is a constant series of disappointments it's because you want it to be that way. Maybe fur the attention, I dunno. I don't understand the purpose of the drama.

Anyhoo, I decided anytime I get up from a nap , it's morning. Morning means a fresh start to me. All my problems and the mildly annoying things that threw a furball into the mix before I napped are gone. I don't see why I have to be limited to some dictionary definition of morning if I define "morning" as any time I get a chance to start over. So I say "Good Morning!" day and night in the cheerfullest way possible. It's my thing.

Back to Grock. Grock comes up on the deck as usual, looking fur breakfast, so I said, "Good Morning!"

And he stares at me and says, "It's night," totally humorless.

So I say,"But you're nocturnal. Didn't you just get out of bed?"

"Yeah."

"So then it's morning. Good morning!"

He stares at me, blinks, rolls his eyes, and says, "It's night."

And that's when I ate him.

Just kidding. He's done this before. I can see deep down there's a purrsonality in there somewhere. Sometimes other critters are in a bad mood because it's just a bad day. I've found a pebble in my kibble more than a few times, myself. Why dwell on it? But the thing is, I dunno, how should I put this? Ah! Got it!

Happiness is a can of chickawn and gravy. If you keep spitting in someone else's chickawn and gravy, eventually they won't offer to share it with you.

I think I'm done sharing my chickawn and gravy with Grock. I'll still say hi, but until he figures out the world isn't the problem, he is, there doesn't seem to be anything I can do for him. He's a very bitter toad.

If I didn't know better, I'd think he ate fire ants for breakfast every morning.

Well, I thought I had this internet thingymajigy figured out. I tried uploading a video again, an old, short one so I could get it done before the connection timed out.

It's here. It's the poem about Tuscan Milk.

I can't get it to play past verse one. I don't know if that's because of my connection while uploading or my connection while playing. Anyway, I hope the whole thing plays.

Where is that primate they promised to send from the phone company? They're supposed to hook up our new connection so I can get back to work. I get the feeling they're not taking me seriously, but I'm sure you all know how hard it is to hold a phone in the first place without having to listen and press the right number when the computer asks you a question. It's even hard fur humans to do it, how can they expect us to?

Catster is helping us tell feline authors about the "Cats On Humans" Book Contest! They put links on their Diary Central Page, which is THE place to go if you want some good cat blogging action.

My friend Todd the Office Cat was a diary pick of the day once. He's a pawfessional writer. I read his column in the Lennox Independent. My primate reads Todd's primate's column. And the one about what happened in the area 99 years ago.

Oh, who am I kidding, she usually reads the whole thing. It's a small town so it's a small paper. Then my sister sleeps on it because she likes paper and newspaper is big enough to stretch out on even at her size.

Anyway, Todd's brother entered a calendar contest. If you want to help, he is the beagle named Dukes. It costs a dollar tax deductible donation to the Sioux Falls Humane Society for each vote, and you can vote more than once. That's where I was rescued when I was an orphan so my primate is voting and helping spread the word. Please consider donating and voting! Doesn't Dukes look like a movie star in his headshot?

Wow, lots of links in this blog!

We are getting new internet service in a few weeks. Hopefully that means I can start uploading videos again!

(P.S. Please vote for Dukes! He is in 38th place now and to get in the calendar he needs to be in the top 13 by August 6th.)

"Cats on Humans" Book contest (fur writers and cartoonists)

My primate decided to use her savings bonds on something fun, so since we love funny cat stories and we have a little publishing experience (we have two kiddie-kitty books out now) we are having a contest!

The Basics: Previous publishing experience completely unnecessary! Submit a humorous story, poem or set of cartoons about humans from a cat's point of view. Winning entries will be published in the book "Cats on Humans". The creator of each winning entry will receive 2 copies. Entries must be in English but the contest is open worldwide.

You can get the full details here!

We won a similar contest a few years ago and decided it would be fun to pay it forward. If you could pass this information on to other talented kitties we'd love you furever. (Well, maybe Luna wouldn't, because she can be cranky, but you can bet I would!)

Hi guys!

I think I'm OK. At the last minute surgery was cancelled because my hard lump got squishy so they put me on antibiotics fur a week and changed my food to Paul Newman's Senior formula because I had a food allergy before and they wanted to rule that out. My primate also has chemical allergies so I prolly inherited that from her. It also turns out I have a hypersensitivity to earmites, which I got from Mayday, and other bugs so I got that taken care of, too, and got put on Frontline year round. I'm not enjoying that but at least I still get to go outside on the harness.

My male primate is allergic to mosquitoes, they look like bee stings on him, so I prolly inherited that from him.

I still have a kinda lump there but since it's not life threatening because cancer doesn't become squishy all of a sudden they're waiting to see if there's a change.

Then the primate downloaded a corrupt windows update because her ISP connection is really shaky lately and it ruined her registry and then ipowerweb who hosted her website shut down her email fur 5 days (never use them-- just look at the reviews at cnet) so not being able to do any videos and not being able to connect to pages with lots of information and not being able to get email she ended up just giving up on the internet fur awhile.

Everything is fine for now, and I may be having a contest soon, so stay tuned!

TAG!

May 22nd 2007 5:13 pm

I got tagged by 3 kitties!

Here are my 7 things about me:

1. I'm an orphan so I don't know how to knead. I do a curly-toed dance when I see my sister doing it but I don't think I'll ever get the hang of it.

2. My male primate knows it's time to cut his hair when I start grooming his head while he's trying to sleep.

3. One time I escaped the house and got stuck on a big rock in the rain because I don't like stepping on wet pine needles and I couldn't figure out how to get out of the woods without doing it. One of the farm cats, Bear, brought my primate out to get me. It was humiliating.

4. I just discovered there's a whole other room in the house called a "crawlspace". I've only been in it once but for the past few weeks I've been sitting at the door hoping someone will let me back in. Maybe they will let me have my own apartment in there?

5. Catnip grows wild around my property. Is it any wonder I want to go outside? Geez.

6. The vacuum scares the befleasus out of me but I love the sound of drills and circular saws.

7. My favorite spot in the house is the studio table with the bluescreen. It's hot there when the cameras are on, especially when I'm wearing clothes, but the foam is good for napping and there's always a chance I'll get to perform and have some chickawn treats, so lots of times I'll hang out there even when we're not filming. Plus it's the only table I'm allowed to jump up on.

I tag:

Todd the Office Cat (because he has a job, too.)
Peaches (Because she invited me to Catster)
Jack (Just cool.)
Boo (My friend who hasn't posted to his diary yet because he's shy.)
Raza (She helped Boo with a video about fountains.)
Holly Berry (Because Koda shouldn't get all the glory)
Madcat Nikki (Who has a petition about violent animal videos on You Tube that everkitty should take a look at.)

My primate started remodeling a room recently. She says she's putting in insulation so we can make it our new bedroom and she's gonna put in permanent places for Luna and me to sleep and play in one corner and by the windows instead of a cat tree. It will be nice to be included in the design.

When she pulled down some wallpaper an old chimney came down with it. She only ended up with 10 stitches in her hand but she can't use her thumb until they take them out. Who would have thought wallpaper was strong enough to hold up a chimney!

I'm glad I don't need thumbs; she seems very frustrated when she can't open her soda.

It's a community where pets and primates can hang out together and chat and play in the forum and upload videos and pictures and things. My updated blogs and videos appear there with news and stuff, but it's not exactly what I would call a Loki "fansite". I really don't like that idea. It's a community of friends. You can join whether you are a cat or a human or a dog or a chicken as long as you're someone who wants to make others happy.

Bosco, for lack of a better name, showed up at our house recently. Maybe he was lost, maybe he was dropped off, I dunno.

Now, Luna and I, we are house cats, proudly fixed housecats, but we live on a farm. My friend Mayday is a working-class cat, our farm Queen as they say. In farm areas humans have a choice between skunks and cats to control rodents. I guess I don't have to tell you which they usually choose!

Working class cats and feral cats have a hard life. From the moment they are born they learn from their mothers which sounds and smells are dangerous. Later, they learn from their mothers which animals are food and how to kill them quickly. If they miss a week of school, they are more likely to starve or become dinner for a hawk, owl or coyote. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT A KITTEN NOT MISS ANY SCHOOL!

That being said, when a human drops off a house cat in the country and expects him to survive.... NO NONONO! BAD PRIMATE!

Once a kitten is removed from the wild, it ceases to be suitable for outdoor life. There is no such thing as a housecat who "would make a good farm cat" as they say sometimes in the paper of cats that are playful. NO!

This is like dropping a person off on a deserted island and expecting him to be able to climb a tree for coconuts because he was so good at climbing stairs and to be able to fight off a shark because he took a karate class. A mouse toy is not a mouse and the hand cobra is not a hawk.

This appears to happen a lot on our corner because there are a few farms close to each other here. To the humans who dumped Bosco here, in the event that it doesn't turn out he just got lost in the storm and can't find his way back until it thaws, I would like to say he was lucky, because in this state it is legal to shoot cats without collars and since he has a mild injury he probably would have been if he showed up elsewhere because of fear of rabies.

But I can't say he was lucky, because it's very likely he will be eaten by something before we can gain his trust and bring him to a shelter. However, it is clear that he belonged to a home somewhere as he appears to be fixed, too well fed for a working class cat and he is very vocal around my primates, even if he won't let them closer than a few feet from him.

Mayday showed him how to get into our warm root cellar through a badger hole the primates left open for her. Hopefully we can find him a permanent home with a human who wants him or figure out which direction he wandered in from.

Hooray! I made it to the next round!

I'm getting kinda sick of getting these. It's hard enough to look good on camera without worrying about your ears twitching.

But I am in the finalist pool at CBS. They are supposed to choose 5 videos this week to put on CBS.com, and possibly TV.

One human dropped out after he turned in the notification email to the police and Better Business Bureau because he thought it was fake. Turned out it was real and he missed his deadline to get the forms in.

A sock puppet dropped out because he believes that he'll have to pay taxes on winning time during the Superbowl. But he's not. He's giving away all rights to his video to CBS. Once they own it, they can air it or sell it or delete it so no one will ever see it again. He's not winning anything but a chance to give away a video. What taxes do you ever pay to give something away?

Please help me get my anti-racism vlog aired during the- Superbowl!

As many of you know, I do a talking cat vlog. I have a rare opportunity to appear on TV during the superbowl, and since I don't understand some humans' obsession with color, I did an anti-racism ad from the point of view of us pets.

Talking Cat Vlog: 15 Seconds on Racism

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBKg3bExWy8

CBS is taking hits, ratings and comments into account, so if you like the vid and the message, please forward the link to other interested parties (whether or not they have youtube accounts).

But don't spam and be sure to put in "OT" if you post the link in a non-related forum. I don't want to win by being impolite. :)

Thanks all, feel free to tell me if you post the link somewhere and maybe I'll add some links back somewhere if it takes off. You can get the embedding code from the You Tube page

That's where I excel! I even started a group for all cats who have videos called "Movie Star Cats" but I haven't had the time to figure out how it works. I think any cats with videos or who like cat videos can join.

I hope Catster doesn't mind that sometimes I'm in cartoon form.

My sister Luna is gaining weight again so my primates moved the food back up to the windowsill where she can't reach it so they can give her rations.

I hate having to jump all the way up there. It's a pain. So this morning I left a big, juicy hairball right it front of the toilet so one of them would step in it.

That'll show 'em.

Hi, guys, it's Loki!

I just found out about catster from a friend at You Tube. I do videos there and I have a My Space and a 43 Things account, but I find some of those places a little human-centric sometimes. (I'm lokithecatfromhell at all of those places, but I'm actually very nice.)

Don't get me wrong, humans are my favoritest primates, and I love mine, but it can be jarring when you sign up for an online service and they refer to you as a "person". It's nice to find a place where I can be a cat with other cats and share treats! :D
