We all know the economy sucks right now. But here's a story from Grandma to make us feel better.
My great-grandma was raising 4 little kids during the depression. Luckily she and great-grandpa were farmers because there was NO cash to be had.
She would get a big bag of flour from the store so she could make her own bread, and it got to the point where she had to trade a few chickens, some eggs, and some home-grown vegetables to the store to pay for the flour!
Can you imagine paying a supermarket today with live chickens? Not that anybody would actually have live chickens to trade.
As a cat, I can certainly see the benefit of accepting chickens, but Mama says there is no way she's killing them and removing their feathers for me. I think I could do the killing, but the feathers WOULD be a problem.
Let's bow our heads in honor of my cousin Whitey who passed away from "old age" as near as we can tell. One day she just didn't wake up from her nap.
She was my age and waited until she was about 17 to start having kittens. Then she decided to have one after another (she usually only had one in a litter - maybe 2). Grandma had never gotten her fixed because she thought for years she was sterile anyway!
She was a barn cat who turned herself into a house cat when the kittens started arriving. So in honor of her, 2 of her kits have been fixed and are now learning to be house cats. They are both white with a little black on them and will be excellent house cats. They were born last fall or winter so they are not even 1 yet.
So having kittens that late in life probably took a toll on her health, but what an inspiration, huh? Barn cat to house cat at such an advanced age and mother cat at such an advanced age. She really lived a full life.
Every month Daddy had been cashing his government-issued Veteran's Disability check at our bank.
Today he went to do it and THEY WOULD NOT CASH IT! They said he had to have enough money in the account to cover it if it bounced! Say WHAT?
This is a ploy to get him to deposit the check so they have use of his money for a short time.
Mama called their HQ and they verified that's Wachovia's new policy. So we are cashing the check at the grocery store. Out of spite.
Mama told the HQ guy that it was enlightening to hear that Wachovia doesn't trust the US Government and she was gonna go tell some reporters. And she hung up before he could respond!
We don't like direct deposit for that check. We use that check to have cash on hand during the month. And we've had lots of issues with our bank so we feel better to have some money they don't control. And they are not GOING to control it either.
