Arrival Story: It was a cold dark night in November 1994. I was slated to have surgery the next day and needed some things at the mall. As we were leaving, I heard a kitten cry. I told my husband and he didn't believe me.
But, I heard it again...
So, he went and checked. Lo and behold, there was a little black and white cat out in the bushes. Though her eyes were just open, she hissed like a demon. Tony threw his leather coat over her and realized she came from a nest beneath a loading dock.
He saw the Mamacat nearby and couldn't think of anything else to do but return her. The next day I reported for surgery, but I made my husband promise to check on the kittens as soon as I was okay.
Two days later, Tony went back with food for the babies. There were five of them plus the Mama. I called my vet as soon as I was able and he told us to leave the kittens there and not effect a rescue til they were bigger--in case we should not catch the Mamacat.
We continued to feed them for several weeks. I got better so I could come with Tony and help him feed the cats. Those babies were keeping me going for sure.
Then, on Christmas the mall was closed. We couldn't feed the kittens and we'd not seen the Mama the last two days. We'd made arrangements with our vet for the rescue of as many of the kittens as we could get and we had a no kill shelter lined up.
So, the next day we got up early and took a big cardboard box with us. Tony coaxed 2 kittens to him, but there was a third at the back who wouldn't come out.
Finally, he got the store who had the loading dock to lift it and let him crawl under and rescue the one remaining kitten. We got all three to the shelter, but the black and white we'd seen first stole our hearts.
Chance only lived with us for 4 years before she succumbed to liver problems that were probably a result of her early diet.
I still miss her everyday.
