and I have been slow in mentioning it!
Introducing.... Reese! Mama says that her name is like the candy and said "REE-see". Yup, she's a hamster!
Reese's mama, Trixie, arrived at the shelter with Sonny and Brownie on March 2nd. On March 3rd, Trixie surprised the small animal staff with 11 babies! Mama says it wasn't a total surprise because when you've got male and female hamsters all in one box and they are surrendered the the shelter, they always assume the girls are pregnant. What they didn't realize is that Trixie was that pregnant because she didn't look big at all!
Mama's been whining about wanting another hamster because of how sweet and silly Henri was, and with 11 babies to choose from and babies that Mama took care of from birth, she just had to have one of the babies!
Mama tells me that the 5 boys all looked like Sonny, the dad, and were almost the same color as Henri. The 6 girls, however, were different colors. Mama says that Reese had the most unusual color patterns of all the hamsters and she got the first pickin!
Then surprise! Mama says that they all thought Brownie was a boy... until Brownie gave birth to 10 hamsters on March 20th! Mama says those hamsters were brown and black, but Reese had already caught Mama's eye, and they won't be ready to leave Brownie for another couple weeks.
Mama introduced me to Reese on Tuesday, after Reese came home on Monday, was spooked out, and had to get used to her new cage and home. Mama says that poor Reese had never been alone until Monday; she still lived with her mama and sisters at the shelter, but it was time to separate them.
Reese is a fussy thing. She does not want to be touched. When she sees Mama coming, she races into her tube so Mama can't touch her. Mama has to learn to be quick, I say!
Mama says I have to give her time; she's just 5 weeks old and still getting used to being handled.
In greater news: I got to sit in an open window this morning! Oh it is the most heavenly thing to spring! It's almost 60 outside today, so Mama opened it and let me climb in. I have no intentions of letting Sab have it!
