Arrival Story:
A co-worker of mine had a mommy cat who had kittens and I couldn't resist going to see them when they were first born. Oh, so cute! But I already had a cat. I kept going back to see the kittens (sucker!!!!) and well before the other ones left the basket, Abbie got out and walked over to me to get in my lap. Every time I would visit, she did that. My friend started telling me about "my kitten" every day at work. Once they were weaned, Susan told me to come get my kitten - and I didn't even hesitate a bit! My other kitty, although quite beautiful and smart, was not the cuddly type. Abbie, however, lived her 18 years cuddling with me or following me around meowing her "raaaahhhh" at me.

There will never be another Abbie. Period. My heart broke the day she died. She grew to be 22 pounds and was just as fluffy as she was fat. She liked to sleep on me or beside me and would walk on my head when she wanted me to be awake. She was a kisser and would have spent hours licking me if I had let her. She would also spend hours kneading my belly if I could have been still that long. And those paws... her front ones pointed in opposite directions like a ballet dancer. Although she was never quite graceful enough to complete that analogy. She had a meow like a rusty gate. "Raaaahhh" she would say. And the loudest purr I've ever heard. She liked to be brushed all over - even on her fluffy tummy. She had a white spot of fur on her tummy that was even softer than bunny fur. She was my kitty soul mate and was with my entire adult life to this point. (I got her when I was 20.) I gave her the rather distinguished name, Abigail Von Kitty, as a joke. She was so sweet and loving, there was nothing fancy about her! And when there were kittens in the house, she took over grooming them and was so sweet. She was diagnosed with intestinal lymphoma when she was about 16 1/2. I treated her with chemo and got her into remission. Unfortunately, she developed cancer of the jaw, which I could not treat. I tortured myself over when to put her to sleep, all the while hoping she would peacefully die in her sleep. The day I finally took her to the vet to have her put to sleep, she told me. It was so clear to me that she was ready that I knew I had to do it quickly. My Binks kitty, who is similar in personality to Abbie, really kept me from hiding in my house for a week crying. But not a day goes by that I don't wish Abbie would still be here with me - and healthy. I was given a gift the day she came home with me to live. I didn't realize it just then, but a love like I have for her doesn't come around often, I think. Our 18 years together were so special.

I got my background from

Abbie loved Kittens:
I added some pictures to Abbie's profile because I've been thinking about the little kittens I fostered in 1999. Abbie loved them and helped me take care of them. I would have kept them, but health concerns made me find them new homes. I have never stopped missing them and have cried many tears over Kirby and Charlotte, but mostly over Kirby, who stole my heart (and Abbie's). Their new mommy quit returning phone calls after a few months. I only hope that they are living a wonderful life the way they should.

Have Kitty Will Travel:
Abbie lived with me (and her arch nemesis, Sasha) in three states, two in the South and one in the Pacific NW. She lived in 12 different apartments or houses in her life with me. She was a good traveler - even across the country. As long as she was with me, she was happy to be anywhere. And vice-versa!
