Arrival Story:
My elderly dad's cat had passed away and he was broken hearted. It was a holiday, but as soon as they re-opened I brought dad to the local shelter. We knew we couldn't replace the old guy, but I thought a new companion might help ease the pain. Since Dad lives with me, and we each had one 'senior citizen' cat at home, we wanted a cat that would be friendly and relaxed, one that would love us both equally. We figured we'd have to spend a lot of time in the communal cat visiting room until we found one that felt 'right'. I planned on being there for an hour or two, thinking it would be a difficult choice, finding the cat that could fill all our needs :-} We went into the room, greeted a few cats, remarked on their various colorings and markings. I sat down. Out of *nowhere* an orange tiger appeared in my lap. He must have leapt up before the others even had a chance! He began purring, rubbing, rolling around, in general acting ecstatic to have found me. Then he started in on dad with the same routine. He seemed to be saying "I've been waiting, what took you so long?" There was no choice but to bring him home. It had only taken a few minutes rather than an afternoon! Coming home was really unusual. I've had experience bringing home a new cat, so I'd made the usual preparations. A safe room, with separate food and litter arrangements, lots of hiding spaces etc... Finnegan (we decided that a red haired, green eyed cat with freckles needed an Irish name) calmly waltzed out of the carrier, jumped up on the couch, sighed deeply and went to sleep. He knew he was home. Later, he just as calmly got up and went for a stroll around the place. He was afraid of nothing, not even the other cats who immediately tried to kill him :-} He just looked at them curiously while they hissed and screeched their threats. We checked to be sure he wasn't deaf! His hearing is fine, he's just incredibly cool, calm and collected.

Bio:
Finnegan is turning out to be one of the greatest, if goofiest, cats I've ever known. He is almost completely fearless and has a distinct talent for sniffing out mischief. Always looking to either play or snuggle. He loves visitors and going to the park for a walk on his leash. He even seems to enjoy posing for the camera. When he sees it he starts rolling around on his back while making silly faces. Finnegan is not just a polydactl...we call him our 'polypedal' cat. On his front left leg, the vet feels he actually has a second paw complete with five toes of its own. He has 30 toes altogether. His feet are so large, they actually make him clumsy. We have to keep an eye on him since he falls off things frequently. The problem seems to be that he *thinks* he can do whatever the other cats do. He doesn't realize he can't balance on small surfaces, so he sometimes needs rescue.

Egads!

(shudder) I had to visit the V. E. T. !!!! And it wasn't even time for my yearly shots yet!

Sigh. I guess I'm just one of those cats who is genetically predisposed to tooth trouble. I get my teeth brushed and all (which, I must admit, I'm not all that crazy about) but I still developed problems. First I got a nasty abcess, so I had to be shuttled up to the vet's office right away. Then, a few days later, I had to go *back* and they did something awful to me...'cause I woke up a few hours later missing FIVE teeth. Then they gave me my shots (which I didn't really need yet). And to top it all off, I had to take yucky medicine for days and days and days.

So it's been an icky, icky few weeks :-{

But the good news is...it's all over!!! I'm starting to feel much better and can't wait to start playing my usual tricks on my people >^.^<

Walkies!

It was a lovely day today. And I got to go for a walk by the river! I had so much fun...I took dust baths and ate grass and sniffed trees and stalked joggers and oooh.... just all kinds of neat stuff! I love walks. I can explore and smell the whole outdoor world.

But today I also had a reminder that outdoors can sometimes be a scary place!!!

I ride back from the park in my carrier, and when we got home the new tenant and her friend were in the driveway. They wanted to see me, so Mom took me out. I'm so well behaved on my leash that this is not usually dangerous (besides, I pout for hours if I don't get to say hello to people). But Mom didn't realize the people next door were having their roof fixed... and suddenly the workers dropped debris off the roof without warning anyone in the driveway!!! It made a LOUD noise, and I couldn't help but be scared :-{

I have to admit I panicked. I was struggling so hard to get someplace safe that Mom was afraid I'd slip out of my harness. So she held on real hard. When I leaped out of her arms for a sec... she made a flying tackle and got back hold of me. Finally she asked the neighbor lady to open the house door (she was holding on to me and didn't have a spare hand) and I was able to run inside where I felt safer. WHEW! I had definitely forgotten about all the scary loud things that can hurt you when you're outside.

So, I've been good all evening...no scratching at the doors asking to go out, not for awhile!!! And now I know never to go out without Mom to protect me. Poor Mom. That tackle seems to have taken the wind out of her...she's got some funny colored patches on her skin too (I heard her call them 'bruises') A shame she doesn't have fur, then no one would see them!

May you always have a place of safety!

Finnegan

Adventure

Dad had to get up really early to go to a Dr. appointment, so I took advantage of him and slipped out into the hallway. I've done this *lots* of times before. But this time, Mom wasn't up yet so nobody knew I was there!!! I thought that was pretty cool! Besides, I was dying to get to know the new tenant upstairs. She and her kitty 'Lucky' moved in about a week ago. So after I was bored with sniffing everything, I went upstairs and knocked on the door.

What's wrong with that, I'd like to know? I was polite about it! But I could tell, after the lady brought me back downstairs, that Mom wasn't happy with me at all :-{

At first, I thought it was because it was too early in the morning to be answering the door. But then she told everyone she was scared about me being there alone. If someone had opened the outer door, I'd have gotten out in the yard! I think I'd like that! I could watch all those cool trucks and cars that I love. And I could meet all the people that walk by. But my people say it's a bad idea. They think I could get hurt.

So that's the story. They're still upset with me, but I'm sure I'll charm my way out of trouble in a couple hours >^.^<

Finn
