Waking up lessons

Humans have so much to learn from cats! But today I would like to focus in one very important aspect: waking up. We know they don't have as much sleep as they should. Plus they like to stay awake until late into the night. But have you ever seen a human waking up? They simply jump out of the bed right after the alarm goes off. And then, in a very bad mood, they lock themselves in the bathroom. It's just wrong. And it's our mission to teach the poor creatures how to begin the day feeling brand new.

Tell your human that all he/she needs is to follow these steps:

Step 1: Open just one eye to see if everything is fine around you.
Step 2: Then open the other eye.
Step 3: Greet the sun.
Step 4: Yawn with your mouth opened as far as you can.
Step 5: Take a deep breath.
Step 6: Lick your belly and in between your fingers.
Step 7: If you have a friend beside you, lick him/her too.
Step 8: Stretch every little muscle in your body.
Step 9: Slowly get off the bed.

As you see, waking up is a ritual for a cat, and humans should not take this moment for granted. Why the hurry anyway, right?

Have you all a very good morning!

Net cats

When humans created the Internet they couldn’t have guessed even for a moment that it would be so popular among cats. We are taking over the world wide web! And that’s because we have something humans don’t have: universal language.

It doesn’t matter if one cat is from Senegal and the other is from Indonesia. They both like to play with a paper ball and they both would love to have some fresh tuna. We share the same concerns, the same needs, the same feelings. We don’t care about race, religion, economic status and other minor details humans keep fussing about.

There are no barriers in our universe. And I think this is such a wonderful thing!

Many cats I’ve known through the Internet are now my dear friends, even though we haven’t got the opportunity to meet without the help of a computer. Like Carney, a cat from China who was bought by his mom at a local market where he was being sold as food; or Smoggy, a sweet 17 years-old australian cat that only has one eye; or Shun and Bo, brother and sister that were rescued by a very good soul in Brazil. My nine lives wouldn’t be complete without knowing them and their stories.

So, if you like to be my friend, come and talk to me wherever you’re from. There’s no doubt we will understand each other very well.

My mom is a photoholic

When I was rescued the first thing mom did was feed me. The second thing? She took a picture of me.

Since then I'm her favorite model in the whole world. Everywhere I look there is a camera pointing at my face. I feel like a celebrity being chased by papparazzi. Yes, I'm as beautiful as Angelina Jolie, but give me a break!

Well, at least I have a real nice fotolog (you can see me on Flickr) and now my Catster page is full of nice images. I hope you enjoy it.

But I'm here to give some piece of advice: I know cats are gorgeously photogenic creatures, and humans can't help photographing them. That's fine. We like our faces to be kept for prosperity. We appreciate the idea of the next generation seeing how cute we were. But there are some golden rules. A cat never, EVER, should have its picture taken if...

1) He/she is using the litter box - let us poop in peace.
2) He/she is licking his/her butt - it's our own private moment, so please, respect.
3) He/she is dressed up in stupid costumes- too embarrassing for words.
4) He/she is soaking wet after an awful bath - no need to explain, right?

Oh, and don't forget to ask your humans to turn the flash off. After all,we don't like to be blinded, do we? And our pretty eyes won't look good in devilish red.

Even my mom knows that rules.

Wild surprise

Until we moved to this house, I've lived in apartments all my life. So not much wildlife to watch beside some insects from time to time.

That's why I was amazed when something happened last week.

I was looking through the living room window when I saw it. An animal I've never seen before! A small, furry creature whith a long tail. I started meowing like crazy, jumping from the couch to the floor and then to the coffee table and then to the couch again. I was so excited!

Finally mom came to see what was going on with me. I pointed the furry animal with my nose. And then she explained to me that it was a squirrel.

A squirrel! A real, living squirrel!

My heart bumped. For us, apartment cats, squirrels were just a mythological creature, like the Chupacabra. Or the Bigfoot.

Finally the squirrel disappeared into a neighbour yard. I looked at mom and asked her:

-- Why don't you buy me a squirrel instead of those stupid fake mice?

That's it. I'm checking with PetCo if they sell squirrels. I'll keep you informed, feline friend.

Pedigree?

As you may have known, I don't have a breed. I'm what humans call "moggy". And I'm proud of it!

But recently I found some information about a breed called Turkish Van Cat. They are almost sacred cats, highly protected in Turkey, and - guess what? - they look a lot like me! They are pure white, long-haired, just like I am. And amazingly they have two different colored eyes, just like I do!

Isn't it funny?

As you see cats don't need a pedigree to be beautiful. Cats just need... to be cats.

About cats and names

One of my mom's favorites movies is "Breakfast At Tiffany's". We were watching it together at the other day. The main character, Holly Golightly, has a cat. An orange tabby with no name. And the reason why he doens't have a name is explained by Holly herfelf:

"The way I see it I haven't got the right to give him one. We don't belong to each other."

Poor Holly. Poor cat. I hope they finally could hook up together the way cats and people should do. An I hope she changed her mind and gave the poor feline a name after the final credits. I think every living being has the right to be called properly. Don't you agree?

Well, after the movie, I was feeling happy because mom gave me a name. A really pretty one.

I'm Sofia. This is my diary. And it's very nice to meet you.

My Tail of Devotion for Sofia

When I took you home on that day of march 2002 I didn't know that I was taking in my arms the most beautiful gift I could ever wish for. You were so tiny and defenseless. You were scared and hungry, and you had almost lost faith in humans -- because a human separated you from your feline family, and then left you on the street all by yourself. But you trusted me from the very first moment. You knew I would love you and care for you no matter what.

Since then our friendship never stopped growing. We are so connected. When you look at me with those gorgeous eyes of yours it seems you are looking right through my soul. You are always by my side (even when I need to go to the bathroom!). When I'm sad, you rest your head on my lap and put your arms on my chest, as a hug. You sleep beside me every night, and your purring is like a lullaby. When I had to move from our native land to a strange country I took you with me. And you made me feel better even when I missed home on those first difficult months.

People who don't like cats, who think cats are untrustful, they have changed their minds when they meet you. So I think this is your mission: showing everyone how affectionate and loyal a cat can be. Telling people that every cat deserves a loving home. That a cat could bring so much joy into a family. And that the best treatment ever is love.

On that day of march 2002 I thought I was saving you. Silly me. I was the one being saved.

Thank you, my dearest Sofia. My heart is yours.
