Arrival Story: Monty is our newest feline family member. His story began on March 17th 2006. I was on my way to a client’s house to drop off some paperwork and my husband called me to tell me that I had to rush home. Apparently the lady across the street from us was being evicted and taken to jail and she left two large boxes with small wholes punched in them, which he suspected where her cats. Now, I’m the “cat lady†in the neighborhood, I feed the cats, and play with them ,so I guess my neighbor knew exactly where to drop her cats off in her time of turmoil.
I called my client and told her that I would visit with her on Monday and that I had an emergency to attend. Once I got home I saw the police cruisers and the movers across my house. I approached them and asked them if they could tell me anything about my neighbor’s situation. They indicated that she was being evicted, and was going to jail for violating a couple of her court dates, and would not be returning for her cats any time soon.
I walked back across the street and noticed the two card board boxes on my front porch. I went inside and had a quick discussion with my husband about the welfare of the cats. We agreed to house them in out basement until I found a safer place for them. Of course our China Rose and Alfie were put in a room while we took care of the ciaos .We brought the 2 boxes into our basement. I opened up the first box that had 2 adult cats named Mama Cat and MaeMae. Prior to my neighbors arrest I remember her telling me that she had a 19 year old cat named Mama Cat and a 2 year old cat named MaeMae. I actually use to feed them when they came around my house.
The second boxed housed 4 of Mae Mae's babies. This was such a sad situation for this family of cats having been abandoned on my porch and having to be placed in my basement which was probably not the most conducive place for them to be, but I tried to make it as comfortable as possible. We cared for the cats for five days and then luckily the women I adopted Alfie from agreed to take the family of cats into her shelter.
Taking care of this family of cats had a very strong impact on Damon and me, and so we agreed that we would adopt one of MaeMae's babies. The reason why we chose Monty out of all of his littermates is due to the fact that we saved his little life at least 3times prior to adopting him. The 1st time was when we rescued him and his family from the cold. The 2nd time I rescued him from going under our basement furnace which naturally flames at the bottom, and 3rd time when I went down to check on the cats I found Monty walking around with his head stuck in a plastic treat container. When I found him walking around with that stuck on his head I panicked and immediately took it off from which he then belted out a loud cry. I am sure if I found him any later his oxygen would have been cut off and he would have died from suffocation. Thank goodness I was able to rescue him in time. It was a clear sign that Monty was the chosen one! Birth Day 2/11/06
