Arrival Story:
Jolee is a Katrina cat. I adopted him on February 13, 2006 from the Best Friends super adoption event at Celebration Station. I initially saw him and thought, "Ehhh, no froofy long-haired cats," because high maintenance cats aren't my style. He also looked kind of angry and sick, and very ridiculous with most of his fur shaved off and the fur around his neck standing out like a lion's mane. I looked at two other cats. The first was a black and white female that a family ended up adopting. The second turned out to be too feral. Since I had made up my mind to get a cat that day, I took a third look around. I heard a woman exclaim, "What a beautiful cat!" at Jolee's cage. The volunteer asked if she had any small children, because this cat was a biter. The woman seemed to lose interest after that. I went over to his cage and he immediately sneezed several times. (Most of the cats were on antibiotics because an upper respiratory thing had spread around.) I felt sorry for him, because he had very pretty blue eyes and it was obvious that he was not a cat that belonged on the street or homeless. When they took him out for me to play with him, he shot instantly under a table and refused to come out. Everyone handled him with huge leather gloves. He had lots of really tight mats, and he had bitten their groomer while she was shaving him. (Lucky me, the next week when I earned his trust I got to cut the rest of the mats off with scissors in a painstaking process.) But I noticed that his eyes were very alert and curious, and when I took my hand out of the big glove, he let himself be touched. I realized that he wasn't really a mean cat-- he was just traumatized. I said, "OK, I'll take him. I think all he needs is some love."

Bio:
The vet says Jolee is probably 4-ish. Jolee is named after a wise Jedi master, though has yet to show signs of any Jedi powers.
