Arrival Story:
Dashiell and his sister Lillian came to live with us when they were four weeks old. We adopted them three months after we lost our 15-year old Ferdie to liver failure. Dashy and Lil had been born in a park in Oakland, California. A friend of our vets watches out for the feral kitties there and saw that their mother had been hit by a car. There were three kittens (one more brother), and they were barely a week old. He brought the kittens to our vet who nursed them along with bottle feedings and called to tell us about them. We immediately fell in love but had to wait until Lilly weighed one pound for us to bring them home. Their brother went to another loving home -- two kittens were a handful as is!

What Missing Eye?!?!?

Mommy and Daddy just returned after being away for two weeks. Ms. Looney Tunes stayed with me and Lilly, and everything was just fine while they were gone.
Mommy says I look more handsome than ever (is that possible?!?)!! And I am acting 100% positively normal. (I even threw up a couple of hairballs for Ms. Looney Tunes to clean up. I didn't want her to think I was ignoring her!!) Mommy has noticed that sometimes I sleep on the side with my eye. That means I have to lift my head to look up. She didn't think I would do that, but why not?!? Having only one eye is certainly not a disability for a self-respecting man cat!!!!

Feeling Good

Hello Dear Friends! I just wanted to let you all know that I am doing really well! Truly!!! I am back to my old self -- sleeping in my heated bed during the day and on Mommy and Daddy's bed at night. I am eating and drinking and rolling over so the nearest human can rub my belly! I am purring lots and smiling too (if you look closely). Mommy calls me her "handsomest boy," and chucks my cheeks. I LOVE that!!!! Lilly has stopped being overly nice to me -- we've even had a few little spats lately. I guess that means I really am back to normal!!! We all continue to so appreciate all of your positive thoughts and prayers. Something is working!!!!!!!

Discussion with Dr. Lynch

So, Mommy and Daddy FINALLY got the call back from Dr. Lynch late this afternoon. After many pleasantries and questions about how I am doing (Mommy told her on a scale of 1-10 she would give me a 9.5 -- I'll accept that), Dr. Lynch reconfirmed that the pathology showed iris melanoma. She also told Mommy and Daddy that the mass behind the iris was significant enough that had we not operated when we did, it would have caused me to lose sight in that eye (there actually was disagreement prior to the surgery whether or not I could see out of that eye as it was). Dr. Lynch said there is no way to tell whether the cancer has spread, but it is usually a slow process. There is a "melanoma vaccine" that some veterinary oncologists use for cats even though it is only approved for dogs. Dr. Lynch's feeling was that the success of the vaccine is unproven. She said in a year Dr. Morris (my regular vet) may want to do blood work, a chest x-ray and possibly an abdominal ultrasound. Her advice at this point is to do nothing -- let me live an unpestered happy life. If Mommy and Daddy have cause to think there is a problem -- poor appetite (me?!?), weight loss, etc. - of course they will bring me in. In the meantime, I will just be their good-natured one-eyed wonder. Dr. Lynch did suggest bringing Lilly in to have her eyes checked (Lilly and I are litter mates.) Mommy and Daddy will bring her in sometime this summer -- her eyes look fine to them. We are all just relieved we did the surgery when we did, and hopefully it was in time. Only time will tell.
