Coloration:

Likes:
Jumping, climbing, stalking, hiding in small spaces, playing in water, chasing Teddy (her cat companion), and playing in the bed sheets on laundry day.

Pet-Peeves:
Having her coat brushed, wearing a halter, and getting put in the kitty carrier to go to the vet.

Favorite Toy:
A very battered purple & leopard-skin cloth ball with a bell in it that we call her "stinky ball." Whenever she wants someone to play with her, or wants attention, she'll find the ball and bring it to us, or walk through the house with it in her mouth.

Favorite Nap Spot:
The top of her kitty condo, where she can see everything.

Favorite Food:
Anything her humans are eating (but she gets dry kibble). She'll also chew on anything made of paper.

Skills:
She plays "fetch" and kitty soccer, opens drawers and cabinets, rolls over like a dog, and chirps like a bird. She'll also bring us toys when she wants attention; stampedes before a thunderstorm, and will cry if her sister Teddy is in trouble.

Dwells:
indoors

Arrival Story:
We decided to adopt a companion for our elder cat, Teddy (also female). Charly was the "pick of the litter" from a friend's cat -- bright, curious, cute, and sweet. We adopted her when she was 10 weeks old and weighed 1 lb. 4 ozs. The first week, Charly stayed in a special "kitten room" (a.k.a. the guest room) with her own litter box, food and water dishes, plenty of toys, and even a TV! She and Teddy mostly "sniffed" each other through the door, but once Teddy came in to see the "new baby." She wasn't impressed. She used Charly's litter box, walked over to her and hissed at her, then left the room. It's been a rocky relationship ever since then...

Bio:
Charly was one of five kittens (2 males, 3 females) born to Daisy, a mostly gray mixed-breed Tabby. This was Daisy's first litter, and she was not yet a year old herself when the kittens were born. Her owner suspects the father was a neighborhood "tom." Charly looked different from her siblings, and was considered the "pick of the litter." She had a long, silky coat; brown Tabby stripes and cream coloring under her chin; lynx tips on her big ears; "snowshoes" on her big feet (lots of fur between her toes!); and a hairy tail that got VERY bushy as she grew up. We noticed that she showed many physical and personality traits of a Maine Coon, and decided that her father must have had quite a bit of this breed in him. Like most Maine Coons, Charly is a big clown. She loves to play and entertain us. She also runs to greet us when we come home. Her curiosity level is extremely high -- she loves to explore and climb. Unfortunately, she's clumsy and knocks things over, so I've learned to put things out of reach or tack them down with Museum Gel. Charly also LOVES water, and will run to the sink, shower, or tub every time she hears water running, and try to jump in. She loves to crawl inside of small spaces -- cabinets, closets, bags, boxes, baskets -- and has learned to open dresser drawers so she can hide in them. Charly also makes a distinct little "chirping" noise instead of a meow, which almost sounds like talking. Sometimes she ends it with an exclamation, and sometimes with a question. She will let us know when she wants attention by bringing her favorite ball to one of us and dropping it in our laps or at our feet, and "chirping" at us. Sometimes she does this in the middle of the night when we are in bed, trying to sleep! Charly is now bigger than her cat companion, Teddy, although Teddy is about 3 years older than she is. Charly loves to chase Teddy all over the house; steal her treats, toys, and sleeping spots; and try to lick her face and ears. Unfortunately, Teddy hates this. Poor Teddy sleeps under our bed most of the time. I think Charly really wants to be friends with her, but Teddy is scared of such a big, bushy, PUSHY cat! We're still trying to help them become friends, and have hope that a peace treaty can eventually be worked out... Charly and her cat "sister" Teddy have two cat "cousins" in France -- Moony and Pilou, who live near Paris with a dog named Elliot and a horse named Ourga. Their human companion Kristell sends news and photos via email, and has come to visit Charly and Teddy in the U.S. every year since 2004. They look forward to her visits and her French lessons! Charly and Teddy also recently welcomed another kitty "cousin" to their family -- Buddy, who lives in Ohio with her human companions, Michele and Tyler. They love trading photos by email.
