Arrival Story: I was in my neighborhood when I noticed a woman with an extremely small black kitten. She had a litter box and some hard food next to her so I asked what she was doing with him. She said she was giving him away and if anyone didn't take him she was going to leave him outside in the street. This woman was cruel as hell so I took him. I brought him home and he couldn't even walk (he kept wobbling and falling over) because he was so young. He shouldn't have been taken away from his mother so early. He met my other cat, Nala, and learned to stay away from her for a while because she would always hiss at him, but never hurt him. She was actually more afraid of him than he was of her. For a few weeks I was bottle feeding him. When he was getting older I noticed he had breathing problems and also couldn't meow louder than a 3 week old kitten. He's now 3-4 years old and still has breathing problems. He snores and pants once in a while and still can't meow loud at all. I think it was from being taken away from his mother at such an early age and maybe he didn't get enough nutrition or something, but I'm really not sure. He's my baby boy.

Bio: Salem has been through hell the past year. Last year I had to rush him into the hospital. He hadn't used the litter box for about 2 days and was extremely swollen around his stomach. He was laying on his back moaning and grunting very loud and couldn't move. My Grandmother made calls to many vet offices and animal hospitals and all of them told us it was probably stones and that we should bring him in imediately. Well, we didn't have enough money for any surgery or whatever he might have needed so we really couldn't do anything. We waited about another hour hoping he would get better and he just got worse. So then my Aunt was good enough to offer to pay for some of the bill. She drove me and Salem to an animal hospital and they grabbed him out of my arms the second I showed him to them. I waited about a half hour before I heard anything more about him. Finally, the vet comes out and tells me to sit down. She had told me he had stones, his potassium level was either too high or too low I can't really remember, his blood pressure dropped, his body temperature dropped, he had a heart arythmia on the table and it didn't look like he was going to make it. I broke down screaming and crying making the biggest scene there ever was in that hospital. She kept trying to ask me questions like if something happens to him do I want them to revive him. I couldn't even answer her I was so upset. I mean of course I'd want them to revive him, he's my baby, but then again I had to worry about the bill. It was horrible. I had my Aunt, Grandmother (on the phone) and the vet all telling me to put him to sleep because even if they did all they can there's still a chance he might not make it. I was screaming at everyone telling them I know he's going to make it. So, we left him over night and the next day my Aunt made a down payment for me. The bill was so expensive and I'm still paying it off. We had to transfer him out of there to a vet office that was closer to me because the hospital was too expensive plus I couldn't get anyone to drive me back and forth each time. They brought Salem out in the carrying case with catheters in his neck, arms and penis with a bag filled with blood. I almost passed out. He looked a lot better than he did the day before, but it was still a shock. We had to take him out in the freezing cold in a cab all the way to the vet near my house. He stayed another night there because they needed to see if the blood clears out and then take the catheters out themselves. That cost me even more money. When we went to pick him up the next day he was wide awake! Very active, hyper, curious and happy to see me. I was so happy to see him like that. He had a shaved neck, arms and stomach and a huge cone around his head, but was the cutest ever because I realized how much he meant to me. I was so grateful for what everyone did for him. I also rubbed it in everyone's face who doubted his survival. Now he's doing pretty good. Although every 6 months we go through almost the same thing, but he passes the stones by himself. The vet told me considering he's a male and has a smaller bladder than a female or something that he's more suseptible to getting stones. I'm ready just in case he needs another operation. There's a surgery that fixes this whole problem. My Aunt's dog, Bijon, had to go through the same thing, but it's too expensive so Salem and I will just have to hope that nothing else happens and that I'll do whatever I can to let him live a long and happy life.
