Bloodwork Results - The News Isn't Good

The vet lady called this afternoon with the results of my bloodwork. She had two items to discuss regarding what was found.

1. I have Kid Knee problems. My BUN, Creatinine, and Phosphorus levels are high and my TC02 (bicarbonate) level is a little low. These numbers are significantly different than what showed up in January before I had my dental work. Here are the current numbers:

BUN - normal is 15 - 34 mg/dL and mine is 82

Creatinine - normal is 0.8 - 2.3 mg/dL and mine is 5.1

Phosphorus - normal is 3.0 - 7.0 mg/dL and mine is 8.6

TC02 (Bicarbonate) - normal is 13 - 25 mEq/L and mine is 10

The vet lady said the best thing for me regarding my kidneys is to keep getting the sub-Q fluids.

2. I have a very high WBC (white blood cell count). This usually indicates an infection of some kind.

WBC - normal is 4.2 - 15.6 K/uL and mine is 36.9

Because it is so high, the guys at the lab did some other testing on the individual cells to see if they could discover anything.

Mawmee has a copy of my bloodwork, and of course, it is complicated language. It basically indicates that my neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, eosinophil, and basophil numbers are all pretty high which suggest an inflammatory response.

The number of lymphocytes suggest I probably have subacute or chronic lymphoma or leukemia.

In doing some searching on the internet, Mawmee found this information:

The most common lymphoma sites in cats are the gastrointestinal system, the spine, and the chest cavity. The gastrointestinal type is the most common of the three forms of lymphoma and is not as closely associated with FeLV as are the other two. This type appears in older cats as weight loss and a drop in appetite. Some cats will vomit and/or have diarrhea, depending on the exact location of the cancer. Stomach cancers tend to cause vomiting and intestinal cancers are more likely to cause diarrhea.

The vet lady told us that while she couldn't feel that any of my internal organs were enlarged, there could be enlargement of lymph nodes and other internal things she is unable to feel.

So, while the news isn't good, the vet lady said that hopefully giving me fluids will make me feel better. My urine came back not showing any infection, so the elevated WBC is not necessarily related to my kidney problems.

We'll take one day at a time and see how I do. Eating is also important, and I'm going to do my best to keep on eating. I've definitely lost some of my appetite, but whenever I act hungry, I'm going to get food!

Thank you for your continued purrs . . . . . .

Maybe some prednisolone with the fluids would help with the appetite and possible other bad stuff? I hope you feel better soon buddy.Hi Bun and Creatinine can make a kitty feel awful. The fluids should help flush that out. It helped my sis Molly a lot.Purring for you!

Oh my dear!
There are things that might help...the subqs, while I don't care for them, I can't dispute they help me. Also I take Azodyl. It helps me too!
Sometimes I feel sick to my stomach and throw up, so I get pepcid 2x a day.
I am on a wonderful appitite booster that works quite well-periactin. 1/4 a pill ever so often and you will feel like you want to eat all the time.
B12 works good, too!

Violet, please don't let your mommy be afraid, though your mommy is very smart. There are things that vets don't know, and my mommy always says that every day is a gift, and we felines are amazing...and I know you are amazing...truly.

with love and many purrs from us....hang tough my tabby friend. Chin up.

I am sending you lots of angel purrs, Violet! I hope the fluids help you feel much better so you start eating again - that's the best thing you can do!

I had a lot of the symptoms you have, and once we reduced the inflammation/infection and got my kidneys working a little better, I had a lot of good time left before the cancer made itself obvious. (I have some theories about what kickstarted it too ... in retrospect, maybe I shouldn't have had a dental with anesthesia and x-rays when lymphoma or a hidden tumor was suspected. But then I would have had lousy teeth forever - that's a hard call to make. At any rate, that's something for you and your Mawmee to consider if your condition improves and your vet suggests any "routine" diagnostics or procedures.)

I hope the fluids help your tummy feel a lot better, and that soon you're feeling pretty well again. You might not feel as good as you did when you were a kitten, and yes it's annoying to have to take medicine or fluids regularly. But it's just a few minutes a day, and it could mean you could have a lot of pleasant days and good times ahead of you.

I was really hoping the vet would find out you had something really easy and simple to treat and you'd be back to 100%. It sounds like your pawrents have several things they can try to help you feel better soon, though. Purring for you to feel better and for your pawrents, who I know are sad that the news wasn't better.

We are sending you tons of purrs. I take prednisolone every day along with an antibiotic and then every other day I take 1/2 of a Cerenia tablet (usually given to dogs who have motion sickness, works great to quell nausea). I have not thrown up since I was diagnosed and the pred stimulates my appetite too. Each day we have with our families is a blessing. We hope you have many, many more with yours. Hugs, purrs and much love, Mrs M

Meow Violet. I'm sorry your blood numbers aren't so good. We are sending lots of purrs to you.

My kidney numbers aren't great either. I am clinically in kidney failure now, but because of my heart condition, I can't tolerate sub-Q fluids. But my new diet has helped me a lot. I'm eating Royal Canin Renal LP Modified paté and morsels in gravy. My appetite and energy level have both significantly improved since switching to this new food.

Maybe you could talk to your vet about this reduced-protein food. However, because of your high WBC, I would make sure it's okay with your vet before trying this diet.

Dear Violet, we are purring for you!

Oh Violet, I'm very sorry to hear all of this. Maybe the vet already considered this, but could a kidney infection be part of what is sending your numbers so high? Just a thought Mom had so I wanted to mention it. I also have kid knee dis eaze and Mom has been reading about some of this stuff. I believe Kaci Sunshine was very sick with a kidney infection for a while. Just a thought anyway.

I'll be purring strongly for you. There are treatments that can help your kidneys and help you feel better. The fluids should help. Purring and thinking of you and your mawmee. Keep eating!

Have you been able to eat anything today, Violet? I hope so. Maybe try some Gerber Baby Food turkey or chicken. It might taste good if you are nauseated at all and could help stimulate your appetite.

Remember when I wasn't feeling well, I only would eat if I was spoonfed! Mommy thinks for some reason that gave me comfort.

We formed a huge purr circle for you at the bridge today and every angel cat and dog attended. I hope you are feeling all our love!
