My Tail of Devotion for Alice

Dear Sweet Alice,
Little did I know how my life would change the day I found you.
I remember it well....Valentine's Day 2001. It was late, we were on our way home. Hubby says "let's stop at the store and get some dessert".....o.k. "Look, what’s that? Over there....is that a cat in the parking lot?"
You did what to this day you do best, you ran away. Needless to say, I took the bait. Behind the store you went and it was too dark to figure out exactly where. So I came back, day after day, and put food out. Smart kitty that you are it wasn't long before you knew what time I'd show up, and you brought friends. I didn't understand at first why you or your friends wouldn't cozy up to me, wasn’t it obvious I love cats?! I got on the phone, what to do, what to do? When I finally found a group that could help the woman exclaimed "sure, we have volunteers who will foster and tame the cats". I guess you liked dinner on time so much right in the trap you went - soon as I set it down, I didn't even turn around and wah-lah! The others were another story, another Tail of Devotion.
I call the woman with the group "I've got the cat, now what?" What do you mean, now what? "Well, you said you have volunteers that take in these kitties.." Uh-huh, you. “What? ME?!!" She adds we have more kitties than anyone can imagine and spring hasn’t sprung, no room at the inn. But when you’re ready and need to get her fixed, call me, we can help.
That's where our journey began, and what an eye opener. I don’t think I was ignorant, but I didn’t have a clue how huge the pet overpopulation problem was (and is), nor how profoundly I would be affected.
Alice, you were the brave one, the one who took a chance and ventured to the parking lot that day. Was it kismet? I think you brought me to a path that gave my life a purpose, a mission. No more homeless pets, even wild ones!
I hope you’re happy here, I think you are. You love your cat friends, and if it were up to you they would all be well groomed. I know you miss our buddy Squigman, RIP. He loved you too, so much, I’m sure he’s watching out for you. I’ll always wonder had the Ramones not moved in when they did if you would have become more outgoing, it’s hard to say. But I love you just the way you are, anytime you want to play string toy….I’m your girl. Forever!
