Chester's Diary

Bad news

I'm sorry to start my diary on a negative note, but here it is: I was diagnosed with diabetes a few days ago. So I now need to have insulin injections twice a day and be tested periodically at home to assess my glucose level (this involves getting my ear pricked for a bit of blood to insert in the monitoring device: my mom hates doing this to me as much as I hate having it done! The first time she did it, I swear she cried for a while afterwards for having had to hurt me; you see, she's very sensitive, especially when it comes to animal suffering, that's why she's vegan). Anyway, apparently diabetes is sometimes reversible in cats, so my mom and I are both very much hoping that this will happen to me! She feels a bit overwhelmed right now, caring for two chronically ill animal companions: my canine brother Stanley has degenerative myelopathy, a neurological disease. The weird thing is that I now have a neurological problem too, in my hind legs, caused by the diabetes. The vet calls it a neuropathy, so I've been walk ing funny since 3 days. We're hoping this condition might reverse as well, or at least improve, if we get the diabetes under control.
